History

The mutant extremist agent Cable created the Underground movement to oppose the activities of the Weapon X Program, which performed dehumanizing experimentations on mutants and weaponized their abilities for their interests. Following reports of missing mutants and of a secret extermination camp named Neverland, Cable took direct action against Weapon X by inciting a revolt against it.[1] His core team counted with Domino, Meltdown, Blaquesmith and the mysterious Maverick. In their investigations, they learned that the Weapon X operative Mesmero manipulated the public opinion about the atrocities that took place in Neverland. Cable chose to surprise Weapon X and his first target was director Malcolm Colcord.[2]

They kept track of Mesmero while Domino and Maverick hunted mutant militants from Neverland, Wildside and Reaper, who had been performing cruel attacks on humans. This could be related to Weapon X's publicity scams to damage mutant reputation and justify their actions.[3] Maverick brutally interrogated Wildside and Reaper, with Cable being able telepathically probe into their minds and link them to Weapon X. Before they could take action, Agent Brent Jackson raided their hideout with a squad of Weapon X agents.[4] Jackson made a deal with Cable in order to demote Colcord.[5] He got hold of Wildside and Reaper freely and helped Cable and the Underground infiltrate the Weapon X facility.[6]

After revealing themselves, Underground battled Madison Jeffries's robots while Cable personally hunted Colcord. However, he was intercepted by his former ally, Kane. After a brief fight, Cable was victorious and found a self-mutilated Colcord and learned all the nefarious secrets about Neverland. Before Cable could execute Colcord, he was subdued by Jeffries. Kane had a change of heart and sacrificed himself to stop Jeffries, who escaped with Colcord. In the end, Jackson betrayed the Underground, using Cable's own telepathy to incapacitate them.[5]

Jackson was promoted to director, and the Underground was secured by Weapon X. Unexpectedly, however, Weapon X operative Marrow went rogue and decided to free the Underground. Cable, who had been brainwashed on the intel he had on the Weapon X program, trusted Marrow with the files he had collected.[7] Cable and the Underground were out of the picture, but Marrow and her Gene Nation used his resources to fight Weapon X, even counting with Maverick as an ally.[8]
