Synopsis for the 1st StoryEdit

While most of the X-Men fail to stop the Juggernaut and mayor Sinclair begins to consider letting Utopia be destroyed by the army, the Phoenix Force forces Emma Frost to suffocate Hope with a pillow while she's sleeping. Cyclops sees that the Juggernaut uses magical powers and, therefore, can only be stopped by magic. In response, he sends Magik alongside Shadowcat and Colossus to Cyttorak, who has to see that his avatar is cheating on him with another god and suggest that because of this betrayal, Magik must be selected to become the new Juggernaut. In the end, it's Colossus, who becomes Cyttorak's new avatar, much to the displeasure of Kitty Pryde.

Solicit Synopsis:

FEAR ITSELF TIE-IN The situation is becoming increasingly clear: there is literally nothing which can avert Juggernaut is marching step by step towards Utopia. However, an offer by the Serpent's servant puts human and mutant at each others' throats. In the third part of the epic Fear Itself confrontation, the enemy within is as big a threat as the enemy without. The clock is ticking. And for one X-Man, it's already too late.

Really, really great issue. I know I'm a week late here, but my comic shop always does this to me. Last week I got a great surprise of not one, but two books (this and X-Men: Schism #3) not there for me. And this week? No Uncanny X-Force. Grrr...

Uncanny X-Men Vol 1 542

So, to the issue: It was truly an issue that reminded me of the stories that I first read when I was first introduced into the X-Men. Most of my first issues of X-Men were given to me, and were mainly '80s Uncanny X-Men. This issue really made me think back to that (mind you, I wasn't alive in the '80s, but still). And really the last two issues as well. I don't even know what it is. I just had a bit of nostalgia I guess.

I haven't really been paying too much attention to New Mutants, but Face is pretty cool. Nice to see Adam-X, if only for a second. It's good to see Avalance again and in costume, even if he wasn't useful. The one line of him still owning a bar shows that Gillen didn't miss a beat, and clearly did his homework. I like that.

But of course, the best thing of this issue was the fact that they showed just how unstoppable Juggernaut/Kuurth really is. He can walk on air. He can't be teleported. His insides can't be destroyed. His mind is off-limits. He is 100% impervious, and Gillen sure has shown it. No blast from Face can stop him. No explosion of Rockslide and Gambit's powers combined can stop him. Siryn amping up Dazzler's powers is useless. Avalanche, Rogue, Adam-X, Boom-Boom-they're all useless against him. Because he is unstoppable. And I loved every second of it.

It was also cool seeing the Cyttorak dude, and a smart move of Illyana to trick him into letting her be the next Juggernaut. But of course, Colossus had to sacrifice himself for his little sister. So now we await the ultimate showdown next issue.

Other things I liked about this issue: everything else. The fact that Danger was spying on Mayor Sinclair was a bold move by Cyclops. Also it was nice to see him beating the hell out of a mutant-hating human. Overall, I think you can tell what I'm getting at here. 5 out of 5, and I'd recommend getting the last issue and the next one too. You can do without #540, but I'd still say get it. :)
