History

Origin[]

Umar was spawned along with her older twin brother Dormammu by Sinifer, a Faltine clan leader. Beings of pure magical energy, the Faltine exist in their own dimension. Throughout their entire history, every time any Faltine spawned, the new beings (scions) were exact copies of their parents (genitors). However, in this instance, the spawn were different. Unlike Sinifer, they craved physical matter. When Sinifer tried to stop them, they transmuted him from energy into matter, essentially killing him. This angered the rest of the Faltine, and so Umar and Dormammu were exiled from the Faltine Dimension.[5]

The Dark Dimension[]

After exploring other dimensions for an unspecified period of time, the two fugitive Faltine eventually entered a dimension known as the Dark Dimension, where the ruling social class was the multi-racial group of wizards known as the Mhuruuks. Their ruler, the wizard-king Olnar the First, dreamed of returning to the days of warfare and conquest. Umar and Dormammu befriended Olnar and played upon these desires. They showed Olnar how to make conquest of other dimensions and bond them with his own. Olnar greedily subjugated several dimensions and added them to his own domain. In time, the rogue Faltines led Olnar to shatter the barrier between his dimension and that of the Mindless Ones, a horde of soulless brutes that destroy anything in their path. The Mhuruuks were beaten back by the onslaught and many were slain, including Olnar. Dormammu and Umar slew or exiled any wizards that might oppose them. Then, they barred the Mindless Ones behind a great mystical barrier.[6][5]

This battle weakened Umar, and she became subordinate to her brother. Dormammu ascended the throne as regent and ruler of the Dark Dimension. He reassumed his Faltine form of flame, but Umar chose to remain in her human form.[6][5]

Clea[]

The son of Olnar, Orini, was not slain, since the twins did not consider him to be a threat. As the years passed, he grew into adulthood while the Faltine remained the same, and eventually Orini became the chief disciple of Dormammu. In time, Umar noticed the adult Orini and trysted with him. She was disgusted with the experience and with Orini himself. Nonetheless, in six cycles of the Dark Dimension, Umar gave birth to a baby girl named Clea. This experience caused Umar great trauma, however, and it scarred her even more when she learned she had lost the ability to revert to her Faltinian form. She abandoned Clea with Orini and became violent, picking a conflict with her brother. In her weakened state, she was defeated by Dormammu and banished to another realm.[7][5]

Versus Doctor Strange[]

In time, Dormammu tried to invade Earth's dimension and came into conflict with both the Ancient One and Doctor Strange.[8] Eventually, Dormammu was defeated, and the spell banishing Umar was broken. Despite having been banished by him, Umar sought to avenge her brother. Much like her brother, she cast Clea to another dimension, in the hopes of luring Strange to defeat him.[9] When she first fought Strange, she was the more powerful, but then the entity called Sayge (aka Veritas) showed Umar an image of Umar's original Faltine visage. This sight nearly drove Umar to madness, and she traveled to Earth to destroy it in revenge. There, Strange defeated her by summoning the monster Zom,[10] and in time rescued Clea as well.[11]

Afterwards, Umar began serving as Dormammu's subordinate. She assisted him in his schemes, and helped resurrect him when he fell in battle. While Dormammu was gone, Umar ruled the Dark Dimension until she was overthrown by Clea, who discovered the truth of her parentage during the struggle.[12]

Dormammu returned to overthrow Clea. Clea and Doctor Strange escaped Dormammu, but met with Umar, who wanted to kill Doctor Strange. Umar noticed that her spell was also affecting Clea. Clea revealed that they had been married and that there now was a mystical link between them. Umar stopped her attack and admitted to Clea that she was unable to kill her own daughter. She assisted Strange and Clea in overthrowing Dormammu. Umar tricked her brother by suggesting that they divide the rulership over the Dark Dimension into two parts. Dormammu agreed and Umar banished him to his part: the domain of the Mindless Ones. Umar made peace with Strange and Clea and ruled the Dark Dimension with Baron Mordo at her side.[13]

Clea moved to Earth with Strange, but she couldn't stay on Earth for long periods of time though, as her home dimension was constantly facing the threat of Dormammu, and, every time, the rebellion was counting on her to restore balance.[14][15]

Meeting the Hulk[]

After Dormammu asserted himself as the ruler of the Dark Dimension once more, Umar was by his side, despite constantly mocking him and secretly wishing to get rid of him. Once, he managed to expand his powers with the essence of Eternity and used them to remake reality in his own image. When the Defenders tried to stop Dormammu, Umar took the Hulk as her prisoner, hoping to seduce him and use him in her schemes. Unfortunately, after going to bed together, the Hulk reverted to his human form and felt so relaxed he was unable to change.[16]

Going nowhere with the Green Goliath, she made a deal with the Defenders to help them defeat her brother and revert his alterations to reality. Working together, Dormammu was indeed dethroned, and Umar sent her brother to exile on Earth as a puny human.[17]

With time, Umar lost the throne yet again and was imprisoned, before being released by Peter Wisdom during the Skrull's Invasion of Earth.[18]

When the powers of a wishing well were set loose, Umar was one of the villains brought to Earth by its magic. After Arm'Cheddon depowered She-Hulk and A-Bomb and attacked the Red She-Hulk, the Hulk lost control of his anger, reaching Worldbreaker levels. After Red She-Hulk said that she was unable to calm him down, Umar stepped in, taking him back to her world to try and make him her consort again. This time worked better than the last and the two fought together against Mindless Ones during the day and made love at night. However, Red She-Hulk eventually came for her husband and the two engaged in a fight with no restrains. While letting off all the steam accumulated throughout the years, the two realized they still loved each other, and Umar returned the couple to Earth, where the Hulk finally reverted the effects of the wishing well.[19]

New Headquarters[]

When the Peregrine Child and its three mothers began attacking magical dimensions, Umar conspired with Aggamon, Dagoth, and Tiboro to pool their power in Kaecilius. Kaecilius would kill Doctor Strange and destroy the mystical barrier around Earth, and the warlords could flee there and let its heroes battle the threat.[3] The plan succeeded and Umar settled a new city in Antarctica,[20] New Umarria, establishing herself as Queen of Antarctica.[21]

When a mysterious killer began hunting powerful magical beings, Umar and Tiboro agreed to marry for protection. They magically created a daughter to act as their heir and were wed in New Umarria. Once the ceremony ended, the killer attacked and injured both Umar and Tiboro, revealing himself to be a version of Stephen Strange and abducting their daughter.[22]
