History

Ultima was the daughter of Jack and Apothea Wordman. [1] Jack spent years working as an editor for a dictionary company where he learned how to use words to get whatever he wanted. He eventually began calling himself the Word and formed a cult of loyal followers. Ultima was a figurehead of the cult and she eventually fell in love with cult member Randolph Harrington. When Harrington was trying to leave the cult he enlisted the help of lawyer Jennifer Walters who was also secretly the super-hero known as the She-Hulk. Walter's involvement in Harrington's life made Ultima jealous as she saw Jennifer as a potential rival for Randolph's affections. [2] Eventually Ultima got into a clash with the She-Hulk and when Randolph tried to intervene in the battle, the She-Hulk accidentally dropped a car she was going to throw onto Ultima, paralyzing her. With his daughter now confined to a wheelchair, the Word disbanded his cult so he could care for his daughter. [3]

The pair traveled to Asia where the Word focused on using his abilities to get his daughter to walk again. Succeeding in reviving Ultima, the Word returned to the United States and purchased a mining company in Delaware which he used as a front for a new cult where everyone was to be treated as equals. This new cult attracted the attention of SHIELD who sent agents to investigate but they never returned. SHIELD direct Nick Fury then enlisted the aid of the Fantastic Four's Thing and Human Torch to investigate. En route to Delaware, the duo were attacked and defeated by Ultima and brought to her father. The Word then forced the pair to work in the mines, using a drug to sap their will, strength and powers. However the Thing was able to cause a cave in, necessitating a evacuation. Once outside the Torch used his nova flame to free himself and the Thing. The Word and his minions fought back, but when the Thing knocked the Word out, he was no longer able to sustain his daughter who returned to her paralyzed state. His enthralled followers were also freed from his control. When the Word revived again he once more claimed that he had realized that he should have been caring for his daughter instead of trying to change the world. [4] The subsequent fates of the Word and Ultima after they were taken into SHIELD custody is unknown.
