History

In 2095 Tom Jonson and his partner Hank Jordan were overseeing robots they were using to create an underground city called Project X-36. Halfway through construction, the robots all broke down. Tom cursed the robots, saying he hated all robots and wanted to destroy them. The partners were convinced their firm was going to become broke because of the failure, when suddenly atomic oil began to rain from the sky. The source of the oil rain was a strange electrically-charged planet passing above Earth.

Tom decided to take a ship up to the planet to investigate and see if they could obtain a source of the oil that could be used for profit. As he approached it, he noted that the planet was green and littered with exploding pools of oil. On his descent, his ship flipped over and he hit his head, rendering him unconscious. He drifted in and out of delirium for awhile as he was saved by the planet's inhabitants, who studied him with telepathy and nursed him back to health.

Once he was healthy, Tom tried to strike a bargain with the aliens so that they could all profit from the oil pools on the planet. The aliens argued that couldn't waste the oil because it was their "staff of life." After Tom insisted, the aliens suggested that he went see a pool for himself before deciding anything. Seeing the logic in the suggestion, Tom set off with two guides to investigate an oil pool. When they arrived at one, Tom got too close to the edge against the warnings of one of his guides, Azka. The oil formed into arms and began to pull him into the oil pool. The other guide jumped into the oil and saved him at the cost of his own life. Azka then revealed that their entire race were robots. Tom realized that's why they needed the oil to survive.

Once they returned to the other inhabitants, Tom again tried to strike a deal on the oil. The alien robots realized that he only cared about profits, and exiled him back to Earth.[1]
