History

Origins[]

Thanos was born the son of A'Lars and Sui-San on Titan, the moon of Saturn. While his father was an Eternal, and his mother was disguised as such, the truth was that she was a Skrull. Thus, Thanos was born different from the other children of Titan, bearing traits inherited from his Skrull mother. Sui-San, in turn, realized she needed to shapeshift her internal organs as well as her external, and thus her future children, like Thanos' brother Eros showed no trace of Skrull heritage.[1]

As a child, Thanos stumbled upon his mother in her Skrull form, who told him to keep her true form a secret, and that she would be killed if the truth was known.[1]

Thanos grew to hate and resent the rest of his family, eventually prompting him to leave Titan. He was discovered by Death, an Elder of the Universe. Death impersonated his mother, and Thanos grew to believe that she needed life to sustain herself. This prompted him to attack Titan, beginning his life as the universe's greatest mass-murderer. Thanos' real mother, Sui-San, died in the attack, her death covered up by A'Lars, who now realized she had not been what he believed her to be.[1]

As Death's servant, Thanos unleashed murder and mayhem onto the universe, and fought bitter battles against Kree hero Mar-Vell. In time, Thanos' own grandfather Kronos empowered Mar-Vell with a portion of the cosmic consciousness, allowing Mar-Vell to defeat Thanos.[2]

Even in death, however, Thanos continued to serve Death in the Realm of the Dead.[3]

Realm of the Dead[]

Mar-Vell, driven by the cosmic consciousness, eventually realized that he needed to die, and allowed himself to be exposed to radiation that gave him cancer. Many years after his death, Mar-Vell was eventually re-united with a portion of the cosmic consciousness in the form of the Enigma Force. Mar-Vell now resolved to destroy Death and free all those trapped within her realm.[3]

He was opposed in this by Thanos and Mephisto, Death's closest allies. After completing the cosmic consciousness, and gathering several artifacts of power in the realm of the living, Mar-Vell gained the power to defy Death. Thanos was her last defender, but Mar-Vell revealed to him the truth behind his mother and how Death had manipulated him. He gave him the Ultimate Nullifier, and a vengeful Thanos killed Death. [4]

Paradise X[]

With Death defeated, Mar-Vell created Paradise, a new realm for the dead to inhabit, where they would be allowed to ingest a piece of the Cosmic Cube and create their own individual paradises. Still mistrusting his old foe, Thanos ultimately rejected his paradise, considering it just another lie. Instead, he desired his own past and returned to the Realm of the Dead, where he disguised himself as a vagrant and attempted to force the deceased to realize that they were in fact already dead.[5]

He encountered Captain America, now transfigured into a member of Mar-Vell's Avenging Host and charged with bringing the dead to Paradise.[5] Thanos learned of Captain America's plan to use the Skull to force everyone in the Realm of the Dead to commit mass suicide so that they could be taken to Paradise, and attempted to stop him. However, Captain America and the other members of the Avenging Host had come to doubt Mar-Vell themselves.[6]

Rather than use the Skull's powers against the denizens of the Realm, Thanos and Cap, guided by 4-D Man, instead had the Skull free all those in Mar-Vell's Paradise who were trapped in their own visions of paradise, most of which had spun out of control.[7] After all had been freed, Mar-Vell summoned the Avenging Host to meet him at the heart of Paradise. When Hawkeye grew tired of waiting and attempted to follow them, Thanos joined him. To their horror however, they discovered that Mar-Vell had killed the Avenging Host.[8]

Before they could act on this knowledge, they were forced to fight off an invasion by the Kree. They would soon learn that they had misjudged Mar-Vell. He resurrected the Avenging Host and revealed that he had orchestrated the chaos occurring in Paradise and Earth to break the cycle of violence. While his Paradise had been believed to be consuming living worlds, it was in fact shielding them from the meddling of the Elders of the Universe and the Celestials. Mar-Vell passed his omniscience to Reed Richards, and departed Paradise in search of the first, core reality from which all others had emerged.[2]

Before leaving, he bid Thanos farewell.[2]
