Tama Janowitz was born in San Francisco, California to a psychiatrist father and literature professor mother who divorced when she was ten. Janowitz then moved to the East Coast of the United States. While there she attended Barnard College and the Columbia University School of the Arts and started writing about life in New York City. Janowitz was on the same book signing tour as Peter Parker and his book Webs. While in San Diego she appeared alongside him and Louis Baxter III on a television chat show. Parker complimented her on her book Slaves of New York and her weird dress sense. She invited Parker to dinner at the Hotel they were staying at. When the Hotel restaurant was shut down for health code violations they ended up eating cold chips and soggy hamburgers at a bus stop. Later she spotted him signing books and invited him for lunch.[1]
