Synopsis for "The Last Battle!"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Amazing Spider-Man #115

Spider-Man has been knocked out by his own Aunt May when he has sneaked into the hideout of Dr. Octopus. At that moment, Hammerhead and his men burst in the front door, bent on attacking Dr. Octopus in order to secure control of the New York underworld. As Dr. Octopus, his men, and high-tech defenses keep Hammerhead's men at bay, Spider-Man begins to revive. Noticing this, Aunt May decides she should call the police and leaves the area. When Spider-Man revives, he's unaware that he'd been knocked out by his own aunt.

After a brief battle with Hammerhead, Dr. Octopus decides it's time to leave his hide out, and finds Aunt May just as she is about to call the police, learning that she's seen Spider-Man, and heard gunshots, he convinces her that calling the police is unnecessary. While at the Daily Bugle, Gwen has arrived to see if they've heard anything about Aunt May. When Ned Leeds finishes the story he was trying to tell Peter, that someone fitting Aunt May's description was hired by an employment agency and sent to a place in Westchester, Joe Robertson, Ned, and Gwen all leave to go to that location to see if May is there.

Back at Doc Oct's hideout, Spider-Man continues his search for his Aunt May, which gets him into a confrontation with Hammerhead and his men, the fight ends with Hammerhead and his goons fleeing the scene. He then finds Dr. Octopus with his Aunt May. In spite of his ulcer acting up again, Spider-Man manages to beat Octopus into submission, but is forced to flee when Aunt May pulls a gun on him and threatens to shoot if he doesn't stop pummeling Octavius (May is unaware that Dr. Octopus is a criminal) Spider-Man flees just as the police arrive and round up all the crooks. Spidey slips away where he can change into Peter Parker and appears shortly after Joe, Gwen, and Ned arrive. When Peter meets with his Aunt May, she's called by Dr. Octopus briefly. When she comes back, she tells Peter that she's not coming back home, that Peter is a grown man and can make his own decisions, and that she's decided to stay here and keep watch of Dr. Octopus' home as per his request.

As Peter tries to digest everything that's just happened, Hammerhead has meanwhile gotten to an airport in New Jersey and is fleeing the country.

Synopsis for "Death Is A Stranger"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Thor #178
Thor Vol 1 178 001

Detailed Summary:
Following the defeat of Surtur, Odin has reclaimed the throne in Asgard, although there is much celebration, Sif notices that Thor is concerned over when Loki may return to attack Asgard anew.

While in the deep reaches of space, the Abomination rematerializes on the Stranger's world following his defeat at the hands of the Silver Surfer on Earth. Finding himself outside of the Stranger's citadel, the Abomination sneaks into it to try and find a means of defeating his captor so that he might escape. Spying the Stranger using his space scanner, he witnesses the Stranger detecting a new and interesting specimen for the taking and so the Stranger departs to investigate and teleports away.

The Abomination notices that the Strange had left his scanner on and that it's turned it's attentions to Thor. Deciding that the Thunder God would make an ideal opponent to crush the Stranger, the Abomination uses the Strangers devices to teleport Thor to the Stranger's citadel. The Abomination tricks Thor into helping him, convincing the Thunder God that he is just a helpless prisoner of the Stranger. Thor is then taken to the holding cells where many other alien creatures have been imprisoned by the Stranger. Thor frees them all when suddenly the Stranger appears, prompting all his captives to flee across the planet.

Thor battles the Stranger one-on-one, however he finds that the Stranger's powers are many and that he could quite possibly be more than his match and so he decides to flee the scene to determine a new strategy. While back in Asgard, Odin is troubled that Thor has gone missing and agrees to allow Sif to seek him out.

While back on the Stranger's world, Thor decides the best thing to do is lay low and decides to transform himself back into Donald Blake in order to maintain a low profile. This ends up working against him when he happens upon the Abomination, who has rallied together all of the Stranger's captives. Blake overhears the Abominations true intentions, that he's not beneficent as he originally pretended to be and that he intends to take over the Stranger's citadel for his own evil ends. Spotting Blake, the Abomination and his cohorts easily over-power the lame doctor and take away his cane before he can strike it on the ground. Finding the weakling doctor weak, they toss Blake aside and plot their attack.

Wondering what to do next, Blake is relieved when Sif arrives and gives him his cane back. Changing back into Thor, the two gods attack the Abomination and his minions and easily defeats his opponents. However the battle alerts the Stranger of their location, who arrives still craving vengeance against the Thunder God. Realizing that such a powerful being would be a threat to the realm of Asgard, Thor uses his mystical hammer to travel back in time to the point when the Abomination first summoned Thor to the Stranger's world.

This time, when the Abomination tries to rally Thor to his side, the Thunder God easily knocks him out and returns the gamma monster back to his cell. Returning to Asgard before the Stranger returns he is reunited with Sif whom he embraces in a kiss.

Synopsis for "Cloak and Dagger"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Doctor Strange (Vol. 2) #5

While torturing Clea, Silver Dagger reveals his origin. He explains how he was once a Cardinal of the Catholic Church and was a potential successor to the Pope. However, the College of Cardinals had passed him by due to his youth and fanaticism, and another had been chosen to become the new pope. He then studied the black arts and was determined to become God's weapon and fight against the followers of Satan. While studying to be "the Silver Dagger," he traveled the world, learning everything he could from the adepts of the "dark religions" and then slaughtering them as part of the Lord's vengeance. He then sought out the Ancient One but he was too late: There was now a new Sorcerer Supreme -- Dr. Strange.

As the Silver Dagger continues trying to break Clea, Dr. Strange's soul returns to the Earthly plane through the Eye of Agamotto which is in Silver Dagger's lair. Still disorientated, he mistakenly enters a wax dummy of himself and, now trapped within it, his stumbling movements are perceived as an attack by Silver Dagger who assumes that Clea is responsible and swiftly cuts it to pieces. Once Silver Dagger has left to relieve himself, Clea touches the dummy, enabling Strange's spirit to enter into her body and the excess energy he brings with him restores her strength. As one being, the two of them break Clea's bonds and escape to the Sanctum where Strange's spirit returns to his mortal body which has been in an inert state, neither alive nor dead, since his soul had been pulled into the Orb of Agamotto.

Silver Dagger arrives shortly afterwards, using the power of the Eye of Agamotto against Strange and Clea, but Strange uses the Shield of the Seraphim to briefly block the Eye's power, long enough for he and Clea to take control of the Eye and turn it against their enemy. Forced to see the truth of his charlatan ways, Silver Dagger allows himself to be sucked through the portal which the enlarged Eye has become, ending up in Agamottto's realm of unreality engaged in an endless dialogue with the caterpillar.
