History

S.H.I.E.L.D. was founded by Peggy Carter after Steven Rogers was frozen in World War II.[1]

S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives in the Arctic discovered Captain America's frozen body in the Red Skull's airship from WWII.[1]

Chitauri Invasion[]

When Loki stole the Tesseract and escaped along with several enslaved S.H.I.E.L.D. personnel, Director Fury reactivated the Avengers Initiative to counter the threat. Agent Romanoff was sent to bring in Dr. Banner, Agent Coulson was sent to retrieve Tony Stark, and Fury himself approached Steve Rogers, all in the hope that together these individuals might combine their respective talents to help with the problem of Loki and the missing Tesseract.

S.H.I.E.L.D. assisted Rogers in his capture of Loki, and then provided a prison on the helicarrier once Loki had been apprehended. It transpired that Loki had intended to be captured however, a ruse to sow the seeds of discord throughout the ranks of the forces assembled against him. His mind-controlled agents later attacked the helicarrier to free him, heavily damaging it in the process. The attack became a bitter defeat for S.H.I.E.L.D, although Fury turned one of its defining losses into the motivational push that Stark and Rogers needed. In short order the remaining heroes set off in pursuit of Loki, and began referring to themselves as the Avengers.

During the Chitauri invasion in Manhattan, the World Security Council ordered the deployment of nuclear missile to the city in the hope of stopping the invasion. Nick Fury was able to stop a jet carrying a nuke from taking off, but was unable to prevent another. With Fury's help, Iron Man was able to prevent the other missile from detonating over New York City. After the Avengers' victory and departure, S.H.I.E.L.D. continued its normal military activities.[1]

Cosmic Brick Crisis[]

Upon Nick Fury overseeing the attack on Silver Surfer and the resulting Cosmic Bricks created in the attack, S.H.I.E.L.D. oversaw this crisis, working with many superheroes in the process.

After Iron Man, Hulk and Spider-Man were able to defeat Sandman and Abomination, S.H.I.E.L.D. collaborated with Damage Control and Roxxon to help clean up the situation. S.H.I.E.L.D. would continue this trend of cleaning up after incidents during the Cosmic Brick crisis, with locations such as Times Square, the Daily Bugle Office, Oscorp and the Baxter Building.

After the Statue of Liberty was controlled by Magneto, S.H.I.E.L.D. provided heat from the air as Mr. Fantastic, Hulk and Wolverine worked to take Magneto down.[2]

The Fall[]

Following the battle of Cosmic Bricks, the government granted S.H.I.E.L.D. more funds to invest in homeland security, for which "Project Insight" was created, a security network formed by three heavily-armed helicarriers to protect the Earth. But Hydra, which had several members infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D., actually desired to use them to target and kill approximately 20 million people selected by Arnim Zola's algorithm, any individual which would pose a threat to Hydra's new world order.

Fury discovered something dubious was going on and hired the mercenary Georges Batroc to hijack a S.H.I.E.L.D. boat related to Project Insight, so during the rescue mission, Black Widow would secretly recover confidential files. After recovering the data, Nick attempted to open the files but discovered they were sealed, even to him. Alexander Pierce, secretly the leader of Hydra, deployed the Winter Soldier to kill him. After being attacked by the Winter Soldier, a heavily wounded Fury contacted Steve Rogers, and told the Captain not to trust anyone as S.H.I.E.L.D. had been compromised, before seemingly perishing. Alexander Pierce would take over as leader of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Steven, along with Natasha and Sam Wilson discovered that Hydra agents had infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D.

Pierce deployed other corrupt S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to capture him, but Rogers fought them off and went into hiding along with Black Widow. With the continued failure of conventional tactics, Pierce turned the assignment over to the Winter Soldier instead. The Winter Soldier was more successful. Leading a team to deal with Rogers and his friends, S.H.I.E.L.D. finally caught the troublesome heroes, but lost them again when Maria Hill sprung them from captivity.

Pierce proceeded with his plan, but as S.H.I.E.L.D. was getting prepared to deploy the helicarriers, Captain America and Falcon attacked the helicarriers, knocking them down and successfully stopping Pierce's plan, however, ending S.H.I.E.L.D. in the process. All the Agents went on to have other jobs (like Maria Hill who went to the Avengers) or move on with their lives.[1]

The Return[]

Nick Fury reactivates S.H.I.E.L.D. with the help of Phil Coulson. Later, Fury ended up resigning as Director, giving it to Coulson.[1][3]

Age of Ultron[]

With an old Helicarrier given by Coulson and several former and current S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, Fury would save everyone in Sokovia during the final battle against Ultron.[1] Fury would eventually return to S.H.I.E.L.D.[1][3]

War with Inhumans[]

Skye would be deceived by her Inhuman mother, Jiaying, to ally with her and make him go to war with S.H.I.E.L.D. The Phil Coulson team soon determined that Jiaying's true scheme was to unleash the Terrigen crystals on a massive scale. After Leo Fitz and Eric Koenig captured Calvin Zabo, the Agent Melinda May and Jemma Simmons would be sent along with some other agents to Afterlife, and there they would have a confrontation against Skye and Lincoln Campbell. Skye soon discovers the truth behind her mother after she killed Raina, and would change to the good side.

In the Iliad, Gordon was attacking in search of the Terrigen crystals there, Skye and Fitz manage to stop him by trapping him in a trap, however, after Coulson activated the Iliad's alarm, Gordon escaped and took Skye with him. Coulson and Leo manage to stop Zabo, who had lost control after drinking the Hyde Formula. Coulson manages to convince Zabo to ally himself with S.H.I.E.L.D, making him recognize that Jiaying was the real monster in family. Jiaying was eventually killed by Cal when she attacked Skye in the Aircarrier while the rest of the team focused on protecting the crystals.

In the aftermath of the Inhumans' defeat, the Monolith was moved to the Playground, where an accident results in the artifact swallowing Agent Jemma Simmons.[1]

Return of Ultron[]

Tony Stark would recreate the Iron Legion, this time with an access password that was with S.H.I.E.L.D. saved in your files. The S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier had been invaded by Tony and his armors under the control of Ultron, who were there with the objective of downloading files from S.H.I.E.L.D. to the villain's plan to have access to the Iron Legion again.[4]

Kang's Invasion[]

During Kang's invasion, the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier was destroyed, leaving Fury in charge of gathering what's left of it. Thanks to an ally, several agents that were brought to Chronopolis were saved from the wreckage from the Helicarrier in Manhattan, however, some of them were still lost and being attacked by Hydra henchmen, Super-Adaptoids, thugs and mummies. Fury asks that same ally for help to save them safely.

In parallel to this, lacking the training equipment, a literal on-rails shooter training program was developed by Phil Coulson in under Chronopolis on abandoned train tracks originating from the Old West. Coulson assigned Daisy to take reference photographs of various locations around Chronopolis. With everything in hand, the training program was created, being a huge roller coaster with Lola being the locomotion car, with shooters on it for the agents to train their aim. Coulson and Quake successfully activated and tested the simulator.[3]

Loki Training[]

S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Helicarrier was attacked by Nebula and the Chitauri army during Thanos' invasion, with all agents there being held captive. The Avengers went to the Hellicarrier to free it from the villains, but they were all arrested. Loki managed to free everyone by posing as Nebula to deceive the Chitauris, and now free, Nick Fury activated the Hellicarrier's security systems to deal with the Chitauris while the other agents were free.[5]

Code Red[]

After the Avengers defeated Hydra in New York, S.H.I.E.L.D. was in charge of arresting Hydra soldiers and cleaning up the mess from the battle. S.H.I.E.L.D. was later tasked with taking into custody the villains who were kidnapped by the Collector.[6]

S.H.I.E.L.D. Projects[]

Paraphernalia

Equipment

S.H.I.E.L.D. personnel had access to an extensive array of cutting edge technology. A supply contract with Stark Industries ensures that they have some of the most advanced weapons and equipment available.

Weapons

Regular S.H.I.E.L.D. field agents were usually equipped with a 9mm pistol. A military branch used for heavy security has access to military grade personal armaments. A few select elite agents carry less conventional armaments, such as explosives, or bows. A S.H.I.E.L.D. project titled, "Phase Two", is dedicated to advancing high technology weapons by reverse engineering alien technology.

Transportation

Trivia

  • This version of S.H.I.E.L.D is based on their Earth-199999 counterparts.
  • Some agents use Photostatic Veil to impersonate others in the cafeteria.[1]
  • After S.H.I.E.L.D. was rebuilt, some agents were mistaken for infiltrated Hydra agents.[1]
