Amazing Spider-Man #98

The Green Goblin has attacked Peter Parker at the apartment that he shares with Harry Osborn just as Harry is in dire need of medical help after a drug over dose. When the Green Goblin tries to attack, Peter tries to get the Goblin to see the state his son is in, the Goblin, not wishing to remember his son flees. Peter is able to call an ambulance and Harry is taken to the hospital.

Meanwhile in England, Gwen Stacy begins to realize that leaving Peter behind to move to England was a big mistake and decides to return back to New York and find Peter, and hopefully patch things up. While back in the state, Peter finishes his classes and is confronted by Harry's dealer who tells Peter to pass along the fact that he has more pills to sell Harry. When Peter calls him a creep, the dealer calls his thugs to beat Peter, however Peter manages to easily defeat them with the help of his spider-strength. Beating the dealer into submission, Peter warns him that if he catches the man dealing drugs again, the next beating will make this one seem worse by comparison.

While at the Bugle, news of Harry Osborn's drug overdose has reached Jonah's desk, Jonah asks Joe how he's going to present the story in the papers. Joe tells him that he's going to explain that drugs aren't just a ghetto problem, but everyone's problem.

Peter, meanwhile, has resumed his identity of Spider-Man and is once more scouring the city looking for the Green Goblin. When he finds him the two are locked in a battle, which is prolonged because Spider-Man forgot to refill his web-shooters. However, he manages to perch himself on the Goblin's shoulders and force him to fly to the hospital and LOOK at his son. Realizing his son's condition causes the Green Goblin to return to his Norman Osborn identity and pass out. Peter then takes him back home, strips off and destroy his Goblin costume and leaves, hoping that this is the end of the Goblin's scourge.

Things end happily for Peter when upon returning home he is greeted by Gwen who had just returned from England.

Synopsis for "The Coming of Whiplash!"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Tales of Suspense #97

Continued from last issue... In order to defeat the Grey Gargoyle, Iron Man put his chest plate at risk and now, in order to save his life, SHIELD agent Jasper Sitwell is attempting to remove Iron Man's mask. When even a miniature explosive proves incapable of removing the helmet, Sitwell leaves the scene to find Tony Stark to aid in saving Iron Man's life (little does Sitwell know that Stark is really Iron Man.)

Meanwhile, aboard an illegal casino on a cruise ship just over the border into international water, Morgan Stark (Tony's cousin) has gotten himself deeply in debt to the Maggia (who operate the ship), and he is brought to their leader, the Big M.

In order to square his debts with the Maggia he offers to bring them Iron Man, given that Morgan is the only surviving relative of Stark, they figure he has a chance. However, they inform him that if he fails he will be at the mercy of their costumed assassin: Whiplash.

Traveling to Stark Industries, Morgan manages to get past security due to his relation to Tony, and makes off the scene with Iron Man's body with a half-baked story about being there on his cousins behalf. Conscious, Iron Man soon becomes aware of Morgan's plot to betray him when Morgan is boasting out loud while driving back to the docks. As Morgan's attention is turned towards driving, Iron Man plugs in his recharger in a back seat cigarette lighter adapter to recharge his armor.

Allowing himself to be brought before the Big M, Iron Man springs up and makes short work of the Big M's goons, however, in the fight Iron Man gets himself sealed in the room where the Big M puts those that Whiplash is to handle.

As Iron Man tries to get out, Whiplash enters to deal with the golden avenger... This story is continued next issue.

Reprint of the 1st story from
Thor #163

Thor arrives on Earth to try and find Sif, who has gone missing while she was on a mission to Earth. Sensing danger, Thor's attention is brought to a group of soldiers telling the people of New York to clear the streets. Investigating, Thor finds that they have cordoned off a strange energy barrier that has appeared over the city's Atomic Research Center. Believing that Sif may be in the field, Thor attempts to pierce it with his hammer.

As Thor attempts to pierce the barrier, in Asgard, Odin continues to try and learn more about the origins of Galactus, and seeks out the Keeper of Antiquities to read the Book of the Ages. Unfortunately for Odin, the book imparts no further information about Galactus than what Odin has already learned. Leaving empty handed, Odin hopes to learn the secret of the Incuba-Sphere that birthed Galactus, for the sake of Asgard.

Back on Earth, Thor continues to attempt to break through the barrier, and to the shock of everyone present, he is pulled through by strange horrific creatures. Thor is pulled into the barrier before the soldiers can do anything to stop it from happening. Thor shocked to find that he has been attacked by creatures calling themselves Mutates. Although these creatures have advanced weapons, they prove to be no match for Thor's superior strength, and the Thunder God manages to fight them off with relative ease. However, Thor is forced to stop when their leader appears and shows Thor that he has his beloved Sif as it's prisoner.

Thor manages to defeat the Mutate's leader, sending the creature fleeing with a warning that it knows someone just as powerful as Thor. Thor frees Sif and the two begin to explore where they are, and it soon becomes apparent that they are some other world that has been ravaged by a cataclysmic war. Searching the ruins they find a museum and are horrified to learn that this is some future world where the Earth has been decimated by nuclear war, and that the resulting radiations have mutated humankind into the horrible Mutates that Thor fought earlier.

Finding the Atomic Research Center has been transported to this apocalyptic future as well, Thor and Sif go forward to investigate and find that the Pluto is there waiting for them. Thor and Sif attempt to attack the Grecian Death God, however he stops the two dead in their tracks with a mystic bolt. Pluto explains that he has been scheming to get revenge against Thor, and found it when he looked into the future and learned of the future that may yet come and decided to seek them out as allies. Seeking to give the Mutates an edge in his plan, Pluto appeared in modern day New York City, and then transported the Atomic Research Center into this dystopian future in the hopes of taking advantage of the scientific devices inside.

With his plot revealed, Pluto lets Thor and Sif free from his spell, and Thor naturally resumes his attack but he and Sif are then ambushed by an army of heavily armed Mutates who succeed in knocking the two Gods unconscious. As Pluto gloats over his victory, deep inside the Atomic Research Center, a metal holding casket begins to open revealing within a very familiar cocoon.
