History

The Sandman was a device which induces sleep created by Cami van Helsing at Parker Industries with the hopes it could help her overcome the insomnia curse in her bloodline that would affect her as soon as she turned 25 years old.

During her monster invasion on Manhattan, Shiklah raided Parker Industries. The Sandman caught her attention, and she forced Cami to change its radius, with hopes to use it against every human on the island. Cami complied, but ended up decreasing it radius to zero instead so to thwart Shiklah's plan. Once Cami escaped from Parker Industries with Spider-Man and Deadpool, Shiklah kept the Sandman, and planned to have her warlock-scientists tinker with it.[1]

The Sandman was then taken to the top of the Rockefeller Center, where Shiklah had set up her base of operations, and had Morbius work on it.[2] Once Morbius finished his work,[1] Shiklah put all non-monsters in Manhattan to sleep.

However, Shiklah didn't count on Machine Man of Deadpool's Mercs for Money being immune to the effects due to his robotic nature. After faking a state of sleep, Machine Man was able to locate where the Sandman had been moved for safekeeping and destroyed it after taking down the skull guardians protecting it. The effect of the device ceased immediately.[3]

Properties

The Sandman is capable of inducing sleep to every person in a certain radius. This distance was originally ten feet, with the intention to use it for hospital rooms and recovery clinics. In theory, it could also cover all of Manhattan, though it would require at least one exajoule (one quintillion joules) to do so.[1]

Notes

  • The Sandman is named after the character of the same name in Western and Northern European folklore that puts people to sleep using magical sand.
  • The Sandman also shares name with one of Spider-Man's enemies, Flint Marko, the Sandman, to his vocal disdain.
