Sam Powell was the Public Relations representative for Silver Sable and the Wild Pack. She was also the sister of Pack member Doug Powell. Sam was sentimentally interested in Battlestar, but this was unidirectional.

History

Samantha "Sam" Powell was a Public Relations specialist[5] and the sister of mercenary Douglas Powell,[1] who had joined Symkarian team Wild Pack.[6] Some time later, Wild Pack managers Lorna Kleinfeldt and Morty hired Sam to take care of their PR. One of the main bases of the Pack was the Symkarian Embassy in New York City, and they took Sam to know the Pack members there. Sam did not hide the fact that she was related to Doug. She immediately[5] found herself attracted to muscular, African-American Pack member Battlestar, which was an issue for Doug, as Doug was a racist and had often been at odds with Battlestar.[1][5]

The Wild Pack was hired to ensure that food supplies reached the intended destination of distressed civilians in war-ravaged Somalia, and Sam went with them there. In that relief operation, Wild Pack leader Silver Sable was interviewed by a journalist and, as he was offensive and almost slanderous, Sable reacted by beating him up; she then sent Sam to salvage the PR mess.[7] Not long after that, Sam arranged for Sable to be interviewed in Phil Donahue's TV show. Sam remained literally behind the scenes in the set while Sable was interviewed.[8]

When the Pack was given a free night, Sam tried to convince Battlestar to go out with her, but Battlestar excused himself as he had already made plans with Somali teammate Lighbright - who, by the way, had attracted Doug's romantic interests.[2]

When Silver Sable was sent to jail, Sam joined the rest of the team in the Embassy, where Morty explained that Sable's lover Jacques Girard had given the CIA access to confidential information on the Wild Pack, and the CIA had added made-up charges against her. Sam complained that the public relations mess was beyond her skills to solve. Sable had ordered everybody to leave for Symkaria immediately, and Doug Powell and his teammate Crippler thought that this was a good idea to avoid extra heat, but several other team members, including Battlestar, ex-assassin Chen and ex-supervillain Sandman insisted that they all should stay to try and help her. Morty eventually arranged for Sable to be released and the charges dropped, thou she was no longer welcome in the United States, and she left for Castle Sable in Symkaria.[4] Sam went there with Sable and most of the team.[4] Not long after that, Sable notified Sam and the others that she had decided to no longer actively go on missions, and restricted herself to business activities,[3] thou Sable returned to her previous position soon afterward.[9]

Notes

  • Unconfirmed reports claim that Greg Wright created Sam Powell to answer complains from Southern fans on Doug Powell's racism and negative Southern stereotypes, by making Sam react positively to Battlestar. They also suggest that Wright was also taunting Sam Lovelace, supposedly wife of Wild Pack artist Steven Butler, by using her as a reference.See here for reference.

Trivia

  • While she could dress professionally,[5] Sam wore a Ramones jacket when she had a free night.[2]
