S.H.I.V.A. was a learning robot sent to kill Wolverine. Each version of the robot Wolverine destroyed resulted in the Shiva program learning from it and creating another killer robot.
Shiva had a failsafe that triggered Logan's memories: "every excruciating moment of searing pain in your life... vividly recalled with chilling clarity!"
Unfortunately, this failsafe caused Logan to howl like an animal and then sliced Shiva apart cutting it in half with a single blow. (Using the Muramasa Blade.
Apparently however, the computer program lived on until it's creator, the professor, was killed.
Later research of the remains of the robot have shown, that it was not cut, but rather "sliced, on the molecular level".
