History

The Rom or Romani were a nomadic tribe living along the border of Serbia and Transia.

At the time of Pietro and Wanda Maximoff's birth, the twins were adopted by fellow members of the tribe, Django and Marya, and lived with them until becoming teenagers. Tension between the Rom and neighboring Transian villagers precipitated an assault on the travelers' encampment, resulting in Marya's apparent death and Django urging the twins to flee.

Trivia

• In the Romani language, 'Rom' is an ethnic designation for the entire Romani people as opposed to a single group or tribe. It translates as “Romani man/husband”, and it's use is roughly correlative to the English employment of 'Man' to designate mankind.
