History

Early Life and the X-Men[]

Robert "Bobby" Drake was the second member of the original X-Men, recruited by Professor Charles Xavier at the age of sixteen. Xavier trained him in the use of his mutant powers, and as a member of the X-Men he fought numerous threats for the benefit of both humanity and mutantkind. The free-spirited Bobby chafed under Xavier's stern leadership, and felt as if he was never good enough. When his girlfriend and fellow X-Man Lorna Dane nearly died during a mission, Bobby angrily left the X-Men, and was joined by Lorna.

X-Factor and Lorna's Disappearance[]

The couple lived happy and peaceful lives, hiding their mutant powers. Eventually they began to argue about using their powers for mutant rights. According to Bobby, "Lorna started to sound more and more like Xavier". One day, he came by her apartment and found it trashed, with Lorna gone without a trace. The only clue he had to what had happened and where Lorna might be was a piece of paper that had the words 'Kirby Glen' on them.

Kirby Glen turned out to be the name of an empty federal storage depot. Worried that the government had kidnapped Lorna, Bobby attacked the base. This drew the attention of the X-Men. Xavier dispatched Cyclops, Wolverine and Beast to apprehend him. They succeeded, and brought him back to the institute, where he immediately began to argue with Xavier and Cyclops. Xavier implored his former student to tell him why he had attacked the depot, but when Bobby refused and indicated he would return to the depot if released, Xavier trapped him in an anti-gravity field.

A while later, Beast brought Bobby some food and attempted to talk to him. Bobby opened up to his former teammate, but still refused to accept Xavier's help. He was freed from his imprisonment by Jubilee, a young X-Man who had overheard Bobby's story.

Bobby and Jubilee went back to the warehouse and attempted to break in again, only to be stopped by a team of mysterious mutants. They were captured, but Bobby managed to break the pair free, just as the other X-Men arrived to bring Jubilee home. Before they could learn the truth from Bobby, they were attacked by the mutants who had captured him. The X-Men and Bobby managed to gain the upper hand, following Xavier's advice. The battle ended when Forge, the leader of the mysterious mutants, and Lorna appeared.

Forge explained that he was the leader of the government-run mutant team known as X-Factor. Lorna revealed to Bobby that she was recruited by Forge because of her experience with the X-Men. Believing Bobby would have stopped her from leaving, she faked her disappearance. When Bobby tried to protest this, she told him that when she joined, she also fell in love with Havok, much to his shock and dismay.

Realizing that he had been wrong to treat Bobby as if he were still his student rather than a friend, Xavier apologized to him. Bobby returned with the X-Men to the institute. Jubilee and Xavier tried to convince Bobby to re-join the X-Men, but he refused the offer, believing nothing had changed. He left them on good terms however, telling Jubilee he counted on her to keep Xavier on his toes. [1]
