Rick Stoner was the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. before Nick Fury. Stoner fought alongside Fury during World War II. When Hydra stole the Guardian armor, Stoner, then the head of the CIA, and Logan (aka Wolverine) were sent to retrieve it.[2]

Stoner was selected to be the first Director of the new organisation of S.H.I.E.L.D., but was killed in action by Hydra soon after his appointment. In personality he was very much by-the-book, and because of this he clashed with Fury during World War II. As Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. he looked at the dossiers of the Howling Commandos and said that "these jokers will never become S.H.I.E.L.D. agents as long as I'm director."[2]

Stoner uncovered a mole in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s agency after a series of sabotage. While trying to locate the traitor, he was shot and apparently mortally wounded by Hydra. Stoner managed to get to Tony Stark and gasp out a warning before dying of his wounds.[2]

Years later, however, it was reported that Stoner never actually died, but was disavowed and abandoned by S.H.I.E.L.D. Seeking revenge on the agency, Stoner used the codename "Fallen Angel" to lure Nick Fury to a project capable of manipulating reality, accessible only to the director. Fury and Stoner fell through the portal to this project's pocket world, but Stoner died during the conflict.[3]

Rick Stoner had extensive experience in espionage and black ops.

Rick Stoner had the entire arsenal of SHIELD at his disposal.

Stoner was never referred to by name in Fury / Agent 13; only as the former director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Nick's predecessor.
