According to the myth, Pele is the daughter of Tame, leader of the Kahunas or Polynesian Gods, and Haumea, which lived once on Earth, until they were forced to march to his celestial kingdom of Hawaiki by the Celestial ones. Pele and her sister Namaka competed by the right to become Gods, this rivalry was accentuated by the fact that Pele seduced the lover of her sister.
The ferocious fight that was fought between both sisters, caused the creation of the islands of Hawaii from extracted volcanic Earth rock. In the course of the battle, Pele was assassinated by her sister, but Tame revived her and turned her into a goddess. Furious, Namaka sent a series of spells that tied the mortal heart of her sister to the island of Kilauea, so that Pele could not leave.
Already in recent times, Pele, disguised like the mutant Risque, attracted X-Force to the island, so that the mutant heroes helped her to recover her mortal heart. Namaka nevertheless, wishing to prevent that her sister from freeing herself, sent the Lava Men to fight against the mutants, finally these prevailed and recovered the heart of Pele, so that the goddess of the volcano could march to her father's celestial kingdom.
Pele possesses various superhuman abilities common to the Hawaiian Gods.
Superhuman Strength: Like all members of her race, Pele is superhumanly strong. Her strength is roughly average for a Hawaiian goddess and she can lift about 25 tons.
Superhuman Speed: Pele can run and move at speeds that are superior to the speeds attainable by the finest human athlete.
Superhuman Stamina: Pele's musculature produces considerably less fatigue toxins during physical activity than the musculature of humans. She can physically exert herself at peak capacity for about 24 hours before the build up of fatigue toxins in her bloodstream begins to impair her.
Superhumanly Dense Tissue: Pele's bodily tissues have about 3 times the density of the bodily tissues of a human, contributing somewhat to her superhuman strength and weight.
Superhuman Agility: Pele's agility, balance, and bodily coordination are enhanced to levels beyond the natural physical limits of even the finest human athlete.
Superhuman Reflexes: Pele's reflexes are similarly enhanced and are superior to those of the finest human athlete.
Superhuman Durability: Pele's body is much harder and more resistant to injury than the body of a human being. Pele can withstand high caliber bullets, powerful impact forces, exposure to extremes of heat and pressure, falls from great heights, and powerful energy blasts without being injured.
Immortality: Pele, like all members of her race, is functionally immortal in the sense that she hasn't aged since reaching adulthood, is immune to further aging, and is also immune to all known Earthly diseases and infections. However, this doesn't mean that she can't be killed, only that it is much more difficult for her to do so than most other beings.
- Regenerative Healing Factor: Like all members of her race, Pele can sustain injury. However, her godly lifeforce and metabolism enables her to rapidly heal damaged tissue with much greater speed and efficiency than a human is capable of. The speed with which she heals can vary, depending upon the severity of the injury or injuries sustained. However, she isn't able to regenerate missing limbs or organs without the aid of powerful magical assistance.
Energy Manipulation: Pele is capable of manipulating great amounts of energy for a number of purposes. She is able to mystically control fire and molten rock to the point where she can use them offensively if necessary. She can also generate powerful blasts of extreme heat. Like all members of her race, Pele can also use this energy to teleport herself across great distances, even across dimensions.
Shapeshifting: Pele also possesses vast shapeshifting abilities, the full extent of which aren't known. She has been known to appear as both a beautiful young woman as well as an extremely elderly woman. She can also take the shape of inanimate objects or even as a fire spirit. At will, Pele can also grow in size, up to heights of at least 20 feet.
