History

Nicholas Fury (Earth-92131) from X-Men The Animated Series Season 5 11 001

Nick Fury during World War II

Nick Fury was a soldier who fought during World War II as a member of the Howling Commandos against the Nazis, and gained the rank of sergeant. He met and shook hands with Captain America during the war.[1]

Some time after the war ended, Fury became director of S.H.I.E.L.D.. He also lost sight in his left eye due to an injury. At one point, it was believed that Fury was killed and J. Jonah Jameson published his obituary, but goofed by displaying Fury's photo in reverse.

Years later, S.H.I.E.L.D. had Jameson kidnapped where he was brought before Fury, who needed Jameson's help to catch the Chameleon, an international criminal working for terrorists. Fury gave Jameson an emblem which would summon undercover S.H.I.E.L.D. agents should he suspect something. When the Chameleon infiltrated the Daily Bugle, a chase broke out between the shapeshifter and undercover agents, and Spider-Man got involved. With help from Spider-Man, the Chameleon was caught and Fury thanked Spider-Man.[2]

Fury and Spider-Man crossed paths again when John Hardesky was abducted from S.H.I.E.L.D.'s prison by the Wilson Fisk (who wanted to acquire the super soldier formula which created Captain America). Fury showed his appreciation for Spider-Man's help once again when Hardesky was returned.3 They crossed paths for a final time when Electro took control of New York City's power supply. Electro eventually toppled S.H.I.E.L.D., although was eventually stopped by Spider-Man and the Six Forgotten Warriors.[3]
