Quote1 [W]e were with the Avengers, trying to save a dying Multiverse...and we were hunting the cause--the Beyonders. Quote2
Starbrand[src]

Sunspot, having bought A.I.M., organized a group of Avengers to oppose the incursions and the imminent death of the Multiverse.[5] These "New Avengers" stood apart from Rogers' Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D., who were hunting the Illuminati, until they all reconciled in the end to face the incursions.[6] Meanwhile, Sunspot had sent a dedicated team of "Multiversal Avengers" to figure out the cause of the incursions,[5] eventually finding the Beyonders, but they were unable to stop the Beyonders,[7] and the Multiverse was destroyed.[8]

After the Multiverse's restoration,[9] Sunspot and Avengers Idea Mechanics started a new team, with no relation to the original.[1][10]

History

Origin[]

After the Avengers fell under S.H.I.E.L.D. authority and Steve Rogers began his obsessive hunt for the Illuminati, numerous Avengers left the team, refusing to hunt down fellow heroes. Several of these former Avengers created a new team led by Sunspot, as an external party to the Illuminati/S.H.I.E.L.D. conflict and to focus exclusively on a countermeasure against the incursions that threatened the existence of the universe.[11]

Multiversal Avengers[]

Using A.I.M.'s resources, Sunspot managed to put into operation a machine capable of transporting individuals across the Multiverse, in hopes of finding the source of the decay of the Multiverse, and a group of them, the "Multiversal Avengers," embarked in said mission.[12] Meanwhile, he also began recollecting the mechanisms put in the Earth by Ex Nihilo, self-sustenance in the form of the Children of the Sun, self-defense in the form of Pod, evolution in the form of Validator, and the power of replication, seized by Shang-Chi.[2]

The Multiversal Avengers—Starbrand, Nightmask, Ex Nihilo and the Ex Nihilii, Abyss, Hyperion, and Odinson—arrived at the base of the Black Priests, whom they believed to be enemies, as they would destroy alternate Earths. Both sides fought each other until Doctor Strange revealed himself as the leader of the Priests and stopped the conflict. Back to his Sanctum, Stephen explained them the true intention of the Black Priests, that to save the Multiverse instead of destroy it, even if their methods included the destruction of Earths.[13]

Shortly before their encounter, Strange had convinced his fellow Black Priests the need to attack their enemies, the Ivory Kings (also known as the Beyonders) and Rabum Alal, so he offered to help the Avengers face them. In order to get to the Ivory Kings, it was needed to get hold of one of their Mapmakers, and in order to get to Rabum Alal, it was needed to get hold of one of his Black Swans. The Avengers would go get one of them, while the Black Priests tried to get the other.[13]

The Avengers traveled across numerous universes, navigating the map left by the Mapmakers. After one last jump across universes that cost Nightmask's life, the Avengers found themselves face to face with a fissure in time and space. From it, two Beyonders emerged and demanded the heroes to fall back. Upon denying their request, the Avengers faced the Beyonders. In an attempt to reprogram one of the Beyonders, Abyss and the Ex Nihilii sacrificed themselves, and after being stabbed by the second Beyonder, Starbrand used his last breath to unleash the energy within him and destroy it. The only surviving Avengers, Odinson and Hyperion, found themselves against an incoming wave of countless of Beyonders and faced their deaths with delight.[7]

As Val Richards had informed her father that the Illuminati couldn't win in their actions, he and his peers decided to set a trap to S.H.I.E.L.D. by letting them track the group in their safe-house of Cádiz, Spain.[4]

As the Archangel Helicarriers stationed over the safe-house and War Machine Drones, Hawkeye and Captain Marvel were deployed against the Illuminati, Sunspot brought his own ship over the Helicarriers and ordered S.H.I.E.L.D. to stand down.[4] As a response, Rogers deployed the lobotomized Hulk from an alternate dimension. Steve Rogers arrived to the battle field, where he confronted the Illuminati, and deployed the Mighty Avengers. The Mighty Avengers and the Avengers engaged the Illuminati and Sunspot's Avengers in combat until the Invisible Woman stopped the conflict.[14] Once the Illuminati and Steve Rogers came into terms, they started working together with Sunspot's Avengers.[6]

Avengers Idea Mechanics[]

New Avengers Vol 4 1 Solicit

Following the death and rebirth of the universe caused by the incursion crisis, da Costa restructured A.I.M. as Avengers Idea Mechanics in the following months, turning it into a group dedicated to international rescue operations, backed up by an Avengers unit, known in the media as the "New" Avengers. The operation ran on the Avengers Island, counting with the inestimable support of Dr. Toni Ho and Dr. Max Brashear. The group was led by the former Thunderbolt Songbird, and was formed by the eccentric Squirrel Girl, the mage Wiccan, the alien hybrid Hulkling, the mystic warrior White Tiger, and the street fighter Power Man.[15]

The new Avengers were tasked to deal with a crisis in Paris, which was caused by the vile extradimensional interloper Maker, who had managed to take control over W.H.I.S.P.E.R.[1] A squad of gamma-enhanced S.H.I.E.L.D. agents was mind-controlled and turned into brainless creatures with the objective of bringing death to Earth. S.H.I.E.L.D. also intervened in the problem, assigning their agent Hawkeye to join A.I.M.'s Avengers as a liaison.[15] The Maker deployed his creature, the Neohaedron, to combat the Avengers. Combining research and action, the Avengers dismantled the Maker's plan and freed the victims from his infection.[16]

The process was still partially successful in summoning a ghost wizard from the Fifth Cosmos, Moridun.[16] The dark creature turned his attention to the Knights of the Infinite, a clan of Kree/Skrull hybrids who regarded Hulkling as their messianic hero able to weild the sacred Star-Sword. In need of help, they kidnapped Hulkling and Wiccan to outer space in order to get help.[17] In Castle Tarnala, Hulkling and Wiccan were attacked by Moridun. The other Avengers, assisted by Pod, were able to follow their teammates and apparently help them destroy Moridun. In fact, Moridun schemed the situation to be able to corrupt Wiccan.[18] As the Avengers kept investigating W.H.I.S.P.E.R., the signs of Moridun's possession became obvious due to Wiccan's violent conduct. The problem was addressed by Avengers who travelled from a future when Moridun was able to accomplish his plans.[19] On the Avengers Island, the time travellers exposed the terrible situation, allowing Wiccan to purge Moridun before their bond could become permanent.[20]

A.I.M. was contacted by Rick Jones, who was running away from S.H.I.E.L.D. after unveiling their disturbing Project: Kobik. Da Costa inquired the Avengers about their intention of fighting S.H.I.E.L.D. to rescue Jones. As Squirrel Girl, Wiccan, and Hulkling refused to take part in the mission, he had them leave A.I.M. to maintain the new Avengers in their own terms. A.I.M. was able to rescue Rick Jones from the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but during the mission Songbird was revealed to be a S.H.I.E.L.D. undercover agent inside A.I.M.[21] As a response, the Pentagon sent the bizarre American Kaiju to attack A.I.M. and retrieve Jones. Da Costa activated his Avenger Five gargantuan robot powered by Pod to protect the island.[22] However, S.H.I.E.L.D. gained tactical advantage specially after Songbird betrayed A.I.M.; although the Kaiju was defeated, A.I.M. was forced to evacuate their base to escape S.H.I.E.L.D., relocating to Avenger Base Two, on the Savage Land.[23]

As a result of the war between S.H.I.E.L.D. and A.I.M., Hawkeye had his ties with both cut. He was joined by Songbird, Squirrel Girl, Wiccan, and Hulkling by fate as they teamed up to combat the Plunderer. However, they showed no interest in having Songbird alongside them due to her actions as a spy. Secretly, Songbird actually acted as a triple agent for A.I.M.[3] Moreover, the independent Avengers were eventually contacted by da Costa to rejoin A.I.M. as part of his plan to resist both S.H.I.E.L.D. and W.H.I.S.P.E.R.[24] Songbird was ultimately exposed and restrained by S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Garrett, who had access to the prophetic abilities of the inhuman Ulysses. Power Man, Dr. Max Brashear as Doctor Positron, and Cannonball were tasked by da Costa to rescue her. The Maker believed the incident to be the opportunity to strike at A.I.M. with his New Revengers. His first target was Dr. Toni Ho,[25] who managed to resist them as Rescue. Da Costa had anticipated the Maker's plans, which involved taking control of A.I.M.'s base with O.M.N.I.T.R.O.N.I.C.U.S.[26] Simultaneously, Garrett launched a terminal attack on the base as well using a deadly bomb. However, da Costa was able to trick S.H.I.E.L.D. into believing W.H.I.S.P.E.R.'s hideout to be A.I.M.'s, causing its destruction and destabilizing the Maker and the New Revengers. The new Avengers reassembled to stop the New Revengers for good.[27]

In light of imminent defeat, the Maker fled and abandoned his own lackeys. The New Revengers fell one by one when fighting the new Avengers. However, in the end, S.H.I.E.L.D. finally arrived on the scene, with Garrett assassinating da Costa upon arrival.[28] In actuality, da Costa had impersonated the president to lure the Maker, with Hulkling pretending to be da Costa and being able to survive the shot. Using his Sunspot powers, da Costa defeated the Maker. Garrett was stopped by his on colleague, Dum Dum Dugan, who he had been controlling.[29]
