Soon she hears the scream of a local Mayan guide being attacked by a giant snake, Namora fights off the creature saving the guides life and that of the American archaeologists who he is leading. The archaeologists introduce themselves as Dr. Webber, his daughter June and Tom Bowen. They explain that they are searching for the lost Mayan city of Apaco. Webber explains that a colleague of his got lost in the jungles of the Yucatan, but died shortly after returning to civilization before he could reveal its location. Namora wishes them the best of luck on their quest and they soon part company.

As Namora continues to explore the jungle she spots a Mayan rushing through it, and decides to follow him and see what he is up to. She is lead to the lost city of Apaco. Approaching a nearby temple, she overhears some men led by Big Jim Derry who gloat about how the Mayan's are too busy restoring their former kingdom to glory to realize that they are stealing their valuables. However, they hear Namora snooping around outside and one of the Mayan's obediently knocks her out and brings her to Big Jim and his gang. Not recognizing her, Jim orders Namora to be tied up and thrown into the river to drown. However, the water revives the Atlantean woman and she breaks free from her bonds. She surfaces just in time to see Dr. Webber and his archaeologists being captured by the Mayans and brought to Big Jim.

Big Jim has them brought to a giant idol of the Mayan god Kukulcan which surprisingly speaks a decree: The intruders must die in sacrifice. Namora senses trickery and sneaks around back and finds the idol hollow with stairs running to its head. She finds Mayans obedient to Big Jim speaking through a microphone and quickly knocks them out. Seizing the microphone she tells the Mayans to stop the sacrifice, and that Big Jim is out to steal their gold. The Mayans quickly turn on Big Jim and his men and seize them and in punishment toss them into a pit to their deaths. Before the Mayans can also kill Webber and the others, Namora reveals herself and explains that they have come for altruistic purposes and convinces the Mayans to allow them to stay and study their home. With the crisis over, Dr. Webber and his party thank Namora for her help and she returns to the river.
