Synopsis for "The Two-Gun Kid, Murderer!"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Two-Gun Kid #54

The Two-Gun Kid rides into a town to find local bully Ox Opper picking on a young boy named Bobby. The Kid is the only one who comes to the boy's help and easily trounces Ox in a fist fight, warning him against bothering the boy or any other children in the future or face an even worse beating. When the Kid tries to ask the boy for his name he learns that the boy has been mute ever since he saw his brother hurt in a gunfight. The Kid is not phased by this, figuring he and the young boy will become fast friends. Sure enough the normally shy boy becomes fast friends with the Kid, who teaches the boy how to tie various knots.

One morning the Kid is awoken in his hotel room by the sheriff who arrests him for the murder of Ox Opper, who found the Kid's gun at the murder scene. The Kid tries to profess his innocence, however is told that he will have a chance to defend himself in court. During the trial, the circumstantial evidence stacks up against the Kid's claim that he was in his room the entire night. Before a sentence can be made the boy tries to say something, but cannot bring it to voice the words, and when it turns out that he is also illiterate and cannot write, the judge decides to carry on with the case. However before a judgement can be made, Bobby manages to push himself to speak.

Bobby manages to finally speak, explaining to the jury that he had caught Ox trying to commit a robbery with one of the Two-Gun Kid's stolen guns. In trying to chase Bobby, Ox tripped on the gun, setting it off and killing Opper in the process. With Bobby's testimony, the Two-Gun Kid is cleared of all charges and is released. Before leaving town, the Kid thanks Bobby for helping him out.

Notes

  • Two-Gun Kid Clay Harder was renamed here as "Matt Hawk" despite the total incoherence. Later accounts stablish that in Earth 616 exists duplicated accounts of both Harder and Hawk adventures (possibly because of dime novel neglect) and that the Clay Harder account has more validity.[1]
