  • Hello,

I am writing you on behalf of the trans community and LGBT fans of Marvel everywhere. On a recent browse of the Marvel wiki I noticed a page titled "Transvestites" [link: http://marvel.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Transvestites] and, fearing the worst, clicked. I do not know how widely this is known outside of the trans community, but the term "transvestite" is considered decades out of date at best and horribly offensive at worst. This wiki has previously replaced the offensive (though highly used) term "G*psy" in favor of the correct and less pejorative "romani"; I would ask that the same be done for this category.

The argument may arise that "transvestite" and transgender refer to two different things, with the former referring to "cross-dressers" or drag kings/queens. I disagree with this on several counts. As a trans woman I have been referred to as a "transvestite" by bigots on multiple occasions, while the people I have known that are involved in drag never use it. The word strongly implies the "dirty man-in-a-dress" stereotypes that are all-too-commonly thrown against trans women.

Even accepting "transvestite" to mean "cross-dresser", however, presents its own complications. Besides the highly transphobic connotations, the placement of the category under "Gender/Sexual minorities" does not make sense in this light (as even a straight cisgender man can wear a dress, etc). Additionally, there is no qualifier for what defines "cross-dressing", as clothing does not itself have a gender and as many characters have been put in drag for the sake of (admittedly transphobic) jokes. This makes the category extremely subjective and not of much practical use.

I have been a huge Marvel fan from a young age and I greatly appreciate the work that this wiki does; it was this very wiki that recently prompted me to properly sit down and read comics for the first time since I was a child. I believe that all Marvel fans, regardless of gender identity, should have the opportunity to have fun reading about the characters we all love without seeing slurs targeted against them.

Thank you for reading this letter, and I hope that you will take this plea to heart and remove this category for the reasons outlined above.

    - A trans Marvel fan

  • Hi KalKent. Do you have an handbook named Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A-Z Vol 1 2?

  • I was reading Infinity #1 and it is said one of Black Bolt's wives hates him? Do you know which? And why? Is there any previous issue I should read that explains that?

    • I don't know. I'm not familiar with anything Inhumans or most of the events that has happened in the last couple of years.

  • During season 5, the main characters from Agents of SHIELD have clearly been moved to an alternate future reality, not Earth-199999. A TRN needs to be created and new characters shouldn't be categorized as "(Earth-199999)". Can you create a new TRN?

    • Have you left a message on LoveWaffle's wall? They are the one who fills in the relevant information the first whenever a new episode comes out, so they might know better on what to do. A suggestion might be that we wait before we assign reality designations, just in case something is revealed or changes as the season goes on.

We've talked about doing a TRN for the reality shown in the Framework, but that hasn't happened yet.

    • I haven't messaged LoveWaffle yet, but as of episode 3, they have confirmed that it's a different reality.

    • I have seen the episode, and Deke did postulate that they were, but I want to hear what the others have to say about it, if we should do it now or wait. I'm fine with either or, but lean more towards now.

  • I'm curious to hear your thoughts on it's similarities to Earth-12041, and if there's anything stopping both movies from existing in that universe.

    • This is sorta off-topic, but still involving Earth-12041, but there's this user in the "Multiverse (Marvel)" Wikipedia page claiming that it's "not important" enough to be on the list...But Earth-92131 (the reality for the 90s Spider-Man and X-Men animated series) is still left in the list, despite having much less stories (told in TV, movie, comic, etc format).

From what I can tell, it's three accounts by the same guy, two of which being computer IP #s that are extremely close together for a user involved in the same subject. He just removes it without consent or clarification.

I'm banned, for some insignificant unrelated reason, but I'm unable to talk to the guy. But his reasoning for continuing removing Earth-12041, but not Earth-92131, is because "It doesn't take continuity seriously"; plus some possible nuance in his words about Agents of SMASH being bad or that universe as a whole not being as 'loved' as the 90s shows.

Mainly, he's doing it for himself and I can't give my thoughts of the matter in the Talk page of the Wikipedia article.

    • I'm sure you could bring up the fact that he's not respecting Wikipedia's neutrality principles if one of his reasons for removing Earth-12041 from that list is that he personally considers one of its shows bad. I agree with listing Earth-12041, it's one of the most important current universes. It's where 99% of Marvel's animated imput in the last 5 years takes place.

    • Yeah, I saw that during Sony's E3 Conference, but it was during the middle of the night, so I went to sleep before I would decide to update the page for it.
