Bowers was an employee at Stark Industries who embezzled money from the firm's assets in Lakini. When Iron Man came to Lakini to investigate, Bowers adopted the identity of the Mastermind to stage an attack on the Stark Plant with group of protesters called the Smashers and distract attention from his embezzling. Iron Man was able to reveal the plot and unmask Bowers.[1].
