History

Marvel's The Defenders is a Netflix mini-series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is the preceded by Marvel's Daredevil, Marvel's Jessica Jones , Marvel's Luke Cage, and Marvel's Iron Fist.[1] The mini-series brings together the four titular characters of each of those series - Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist.

Marvel's Daredevil season 2 showrunners Douglas Petrie and Marco Ramirez were announced as showrunners for the mini-series, following the release of that season in April 2016.[2] However, Petrie resigned as showrunner when filming began in October 2016.[3]

Filming took place in New York City from late October 2016 to mid-March 2017, under the working title Group Therapy.[4] Head of Marvel Television Jeph Loeb contrasted the Defenders from the films' Avengers by saying, "we’re still working in a really grounded world. The sky’s not going to open up and aliens aren’t going to come flying out of it. That’s the Avengers’ job, that’s what they’re supposed to do. The street level heroes always come from a very real place."[5] Sigourney Weaver portrays the mini-series' main antagonist, Alexandra.[6]

On April 4, 2017, it was announced along with a teaser video, that the series would be released exclusively on Netflix on August 18, 2017.[7]
