Archaeologist Malcolm Gregory "Greg" Murphy was the unwilling subject in genetics experiments performed by the Genesis Coalition, a splinter cell of Hydra who physically combined him with a tiger, creating a hybrid man-tiger with the memories and instincts of both. He was freed from the experimentation by the hero Battlestar when he was working for Silver Sable's mercenary team, the Wild Pack.[5]

Man-Eater later became a member of Silver Sable's Intruders, the elite superhuman squadron of the Wild Pack, along with Fin, Paladin, Lightbright and the team leader Sandman. In such role, he fought the Pit-Vipers, the Bio-Genes, Hydra, Justin Hammer's armored mercenaries and the Genesis Coalition -sometimes brutally slashing his enemies- while traveling all over the world. A chemical imbalance caused him to lose control over his tiger part and become a threat himself when he could not define whether his memories were Murphy's or the tiger's, and the Wild Pack was unable to cure him. Eventually, the Intruders were disbanded for good.

After the Civil War, the Man-Eater joined the 50-State Initiative's Vermont team, the Garrison, with his old teammate the Fin.

History

Origin[]

Born in Santa Fe, New Mexico[2] as a black man,[3] Malcolm Gregory "Greg" Murphy[1][2] grew up, like other African Americans, in a disadvantaged environment in which he experienced deprivation and hunger;[9] he also saw violence, although it was not uncontrolled or especially brutal.[4]

Murphy earned a doctorate in archeology[2] and gained prestige in his field[1][11] with several findings, including some of a mystical nature. Murphy's accomplishments attracted the attention of fugitive war criminal and scientist Nazi Franz Lubischt.[3] When Murphy and a team led by him tracked down a hidden Inca tribal ground in the rainforest of Peru near Machu Picchu,[2] they were suddenly attacked by agents of the criminal group Genesis Coalition associated with Lubischt. They killed Murphy's men,[3][2] but made sure to capture Murphy alive for Lubischt. Simultaneously, other Coalition agents captured[3] a male Siberian tiger,[1][11][2] by shooting him down with six tranquilizers just after he had hunted prey. Murphy and the tiger were taken to the Coalition's secret lair in the South American[3] rainforests,[5] where Lubischt exchanged a few words with his prisoner Murphy[3] before merging Murphy's DNA with the tiger's,[3][2] also adding an as yet unidentified component to the mixture[6] as part of a horrific genetic experiments[13] that was especially painful for his test subjects.[3] Murphy and the tiger became a single tiger-human hybrid that shared body and mind,[3][2][1][11] with the memories of both beings.[3][2][6]

Confused in his new state,[2] the creature who would later be known as the Man-Eater[3] doubted whether he was a man or an animal, and remembered, without clarity, his metamorphosis from two points of view. Meanwhile, Lubischt tested the Man-Eater's durability and endurance using electrical shocks and shackling him to a treadmill[2] until the test subject was on the verge of death. This was the standard procedure Lubischt followed with other animal hybrids he had been developing for the Genesis Coalition, intended to be used as super soldiers; although Lubischt also had a sadistic streak and enjoyed causing them pain. Coalition co-leader Fritz Sablinova even suggested Lubischt to be less aggressive; but Coalition's Dmitri Petrovich insisted that Lubischt speed up his experiments to have super-soldiers operational within a few weeks.[5] Although the Man-Eater was unable to focus his mind,[3] he maintained the ability to speak and took in his surroundings, noting that some of the other hybrids had been subjected to mind-altering chemicals that drove them crazy. The Man-Eater also listened as much as possible to find out who his tormentors were and where they were going, although he possibly did not expect to be freed.[5]

Mercenary team Wild Pack discovered the Genesis Coalition base and attacked it,[5][13][2] looking for a bounty on Lubischt's head.[5] They found the genetic experiments[13] and freed the prisoners;[5] Pack member Battlestar specifically broke the Man-Eater's shackles[5][3] and befriended him.[14] Immediately, the Man-Eater helped the Wild Pack against the CoalitionS8}[2] by informing them where there were more prisoners and where their captors were most likely to be; when a human-gorilla hybrid attacked Pack member Powell, the Man-Eater joined the Wild Pack to subdue the gorilla.[5] Meanwhile, Pack leader Silver Sable killed Lubischt[5][2] but Petrovich escaped.[5][13] The Pack freed the experimental subjects and gave them the choice between being autonomous or accompanying them to a med lab in Symkaria; the Pack also dynamited the laboratory.[5]

The Man-Eater, whose brain began to improve ever since his release,[3] accompanied the Pack to Symkaria[2] as a possible recruit[10][13] thanks to the help and sponsorship of Battlestar.[14] Castle Sable in Symkaria was the Pack's base of operations, and there[10] the Man-Eater began training with the Pack;[2] superhuman Pack member the Sandman operated advanced technology to test the Man-Eater's fighting capabilities. His powers were not in doubt,[10] but the Man-Eater struggled to keep his animal instincts under control.[1][11]

Intruders[]

After her previous success leading an elite mercenary team made of people with superpowers, the Outlaws, that had been already disbanded,[1][11] Sable decided to create a new team of superhuman operatives,[15] which would become known as[16] the Intruders.[15][9] The Sandman, a former supervillain and former member of the Outlaws,[17][13][1][11] became the Intruders' field commander.[1][11][18] The Fin,[17] an enigmatic bruiser with superhuman strength[1][11] who had already impressed Sable in a previous encounter, was also assigned to the Intruders,[19] as was Paladin, a superhuman, well-trained mercenary who had already worked with Sable, both in the Outlaws and otherwise.[20][21][1][11] The Man-Eater was the last member to join the original Intruders.[3] As a member of the Intruders, the Man-Eater spent a lot of time in Symkaria.[22]

On his first mission with his team,[23][11][13], which at the time still had no name[9] (although the Man-Eater wore a belt with the emblem of Silver Sable International),[16] the Man-Eater went to Kentucky[2][23][11][16] tracking down one of the Pit-Vipers, doppelgangers of the nihilistic criminal Viper.[2][23][11][13][16] Sable had been hired to capture the real Viper,[23][11][16] but the Viper's doubles required Sable to deploy multiple teams simultaneously.[16][13] In a Kentucky forest, the Intruders, led by Sandman, captured a fake Viper and several agents of the terrorist organization Hydra under her command, obtaining information about the real Viper, after which the Sandman reported their progress to Sable. Paladin arrogantly suggested that Sable would surely miss his company; and the Man-Eater flatly told him that, although he did not yet know Paladin well, he would not miss him. Paladin sought moral support from the Fin, who also did not appreciate Paladin's virtues; the Man-Eater concluded that, unless the Sandman had a different opinion, no one in the group admired Paladin.[16]

Sable was later hired by the U.S. government to protect a shipment of food and medicine sent to Somalia, which was expected to be attacked by rebels. She and the Wild Pack personally protected the shipment,[2][23][11][9] but she decided to take advantage of the assignment as a training mission for the Intruders.[23][11] Near Mogadishu, twenty-three armed raiders demanded that they'd be given the truck and supplies; Sable ordered the Intruders to deal with them. Although the Man-Eater and Paladin understood that the rebels were attacking out of desperation due to their own hunger, they fought them off, and the Intruders easily defeated their enemies in forty-six seconds. Later, while the Wild Pack was distributing supplies, they detected a help signal from a US. Marine compound ten miles from their position; Sable had the Pack and the Intruders go there to help, and they discovered that the American soldiers[9] were being attacked by a group of Somali mutants, the Bio-Genes;[9][23][11] the Man-Eater jumped up to face a winged Bio-Gene. Simultaneously with this, because of the Infinity Crusade, several combatants felt the desire to stop fighting. When the Bio-Genes seemed defeated,[9] they were all attacked by Hydra agents led by Baron Strucker, who sought to conquer Somalia in the name of its southern warlords.[2][23][11][9] In the confusion, Bio-Genes leader Leecher used his emotion-control powers to soothe the Fin and the Man-Eater, causing the Fin pet the Man-Eater like a common kitty; but Sable defeated Leecher and had him restore the Intruders.[24] Sable got the Bio-Genes to ally with her against Strucker;[2][23][11][24] although Hydra was defeated, Strucker was able to escape.[24]

Man-Eater was next sent on a sanctioned solo mission to track some terrorists in South America.[2][3] Two terrorists, knowing they were being pursued, detonated a bomb in their lair to cover their own escape, and the sulfur made it difficult for Man-Eater to track them using his sense of smell. Although the terrorists were very familiar with their surroundings, the Man-Eater was able to hunt them down without using his scent, and threw one of the terrorists, Larry, into a river with piranhas after slashing him dead in a fit of animalistic rage. The other terrorist surrendered, and although the Man-Eater considered killing him as well, he decided against it out of respect for his membership in the Intruders.[3]

The Man-Eater next joined the Intruders and their newest member Lightbright,[4][2] formerly one of the Bio-Genes[24] (and minus Paladin, who was in a different solo mission),[4] in aiding Silver Sable and the Wild Pack in Beverly Hills against a coalition of street gangs led by Latisha Arnold] and secretly funded by crimelord Justin Hammer.[2][4] The Intruders faced especially violent, desperate, military-equipped street guns; Sandman ordered not to kill any of the enemies because they had those orders when facing children; the Intruders obeyed, but the Fin found their enemies to be brutal killers, and the Man-Eater agreed that he had never seen anyone so vicious; the Man-Eater remembered that, as an African American, he had known social injustices, but nothing like that: While defeating several teenagers, the Man-Eater thought that the boys seemed to have given up on life a long time ago and cared about nothing, not considering their future. When Hammer learned that Sable and the Pack were jeopardizing his plan, he sent a group of armored supervillains to reinforce the gangs,[4] but the gangs took the intrusion the wrong way, starting a three-way battle in a police precinct taken over by gangs; the Intruders went to the precinct to help the Pack. One of the villains, Blizzard, who did not know the Man-Eater, launched a freezing attack on his face, fearing that the Man-Eater would try to devour him. The Pack and the Intruders won that day: The gangs and Arnold were captured, although the villains fled.[25]

When Sable discovered where the Genesis Coalition's secret lair was, she set out there onboard a Stealthcraft accompanied by the Wild Pack. She ordered the Intruders to follow her on a second Stealthcraft, but Sandman reported that there was a problem with the Man-Eater and that they would be leaving forty-seven minutes late.[26] When they were already en route, the Pack informed them of a change of plans: As part of a convoluted plan, the Pack was going to allow the Coalition to capture them, and the Intruders should not under any circumstances try to rescue them. The Intruders' new orders were to go to Bosnia to thwart a Coalition plan[3] in which Coalition agents invaded the country pretending to be Hydra agents.[2][3] The Sandman decided that the Intruders would contribute in the western sector of the battlefield, because international law enforcement agency S.H.I.E.L.D. had the eastern sector under control;[12] and there the Intruders joined forces with Baron Strucker and Hydra's System Crash against the Coalition.[2][12] During the battle, the Man-Eater lost control over himself and killed an enemy so brutally that even Paladin was aghast. The presence of the Intruders in the battle was decisive and spoiled the plans of Fritz Sablinova and the Genesis Coalition. The Coalition was destroyed by the Pack and most of its leaders were killed; Hydra fled, although one of its agents, Technospike, would have preferred to stay and destroy the Intruders.[12]

A chemical imbalance in the Man-Eater's mutated brain made him lose control and follow his primal instincts[2][23][11][6] due to his part-animal nature.[13] Fleeing the Symkarian Embassy[2][6] through a window,[6] he terrorized Manhattan[2][23][11][6] to the point that NYPD summoned their anti-superhuman police strike force Blue to chase him.[2][6] Silver Sable's wheelchair-bound employee Raul Quentino in the Embassy tried to contact members of the Intruders or the Pack, but for an hour neither answered; he eventually[6] told Sable and Battlestar, who went to help him; and later Quentino managed to contact the Fin and the Sandman, who followed through as reinforcement. Meanwhile, the Man-Eater savagely attacked a mugger in Central Park,[2][23][11][6] possibly killing him; the mugger's victims escaped by going toward a lake, which the Man-Eater disliked, and warned the police.[6] Code: Blue went after the Man-Eater and wounded him,[2][6] but the Man-Eater escaped;[6][23][11] however, Code: Blue's Lt. Marcus Stone noticed the Man-Eater's belt emblem and recognized it as Silver Sable's. Not even remembering how he had been wound,[6] the Man-Eater went to the zoo, attracted by the scent of a tigress in heat,[2][23][11][6] and there he was found by Code: Blue, but also by Sable and Battlestar. While Sable did her best to block Stone from using lethal force, Battlestar tried to reach his friend, but the Man-Eater was claiming to be just a wild animal, not a human being. The Man-Eater escaped to the polar bears' pit - with the bears themselves disliking the intrusion -[6] and the Sandman helped Sable, Battlestar and the Fin follow him, while blocking Code: Blue.[6][2][13][23][11] Sandman also tried to grab the Man-Eater, but the Man-Eat was too fast and dodged him. Sable had agreed to not try to stop the Man-Eater herself, because she was the only one without superpowers,[6] but in the end she managed to stun the Man-Eater with a taser-rod[23][11][6] (thou she was also stunned in the process), and threatened Code: Blue with a diplomatic incident when they tried to take the Man-Eater away.[6] At the Embassy, Quentino and Dr. Phil Newkirk[6][2] performed multiple tests on the Man-Eater. They discovered that his chemical imbalance[6][2] and tried to cure him but without success.[2] The Man-Eater was saddened and tormented, but also willing to undergo any procedure, because he knew that many of his supposed memories were not really his.[6][2]

Shortly after, Sable was sent to prison. At the Symkarian Embassy, Sable's manager Mortimer gathered the Intruders and the Wild Pack to inform them of what had happened, and explained that Sable wanted everyone sent to Symkaria before the American government found excuses to arrest them too. When the situation became clear and Sable was released (although she was no longer welcome on American soil), she relocated to Symkaria and arranged for the Intruders to continue operating in the United States from the embassy.[27] She then summoned them to Castle Sable in Symkaria where she told them she was retiring from active missions.[28]

With their work schedule full,[29] the Intruders set out on their last known mission[30][1] to try to recover an alien relic in Antarctica,[29][30][1] with the participation of the Man-Eater.[29] It is not known whether they were successful. The Intruders were eventually dismantled, perhaps when Sandman reverted to being a supervillain due to a mental switch.[30][1] It is however known that the Man-Eater did serve with the Intruders until the team was disbanded.[2]

In the aftermath of the superhero Civil War, the Man-Eater registered,[7][30] then appeared on the list of potential recruits of the 50-State Initiative.[31] Due to his experience and training, the Man-Eater was quickly drafted into active duty[7] and, with his former partner the Fin, was assigned to Vermont's Initiative team, the Garrison.[30][7] In one of their first missions,[7] the Garrison was to protect a nuclear facility from rogue Thunderbolts member Penance (Robbie Baldwin),[7][8] with direct orders from the President and military support.[8] However, Penance easily knocked the Fin and Man-Eater out.[7][8] It is unclear what the status of the Garrison was after this defeat.[7]

Personality

The Man-Eater was the merge between a successful archaeologist and a Siberian tiger,[3] plus an unknown factor.[6] Although Malcolm Murphy's human mind was dominant over the body and allowed him to speak and behave like a person,[5] sometimes the tiger's mind attempted to take control by overwhelming the body with instinctive urges[3][6] that could be especially aggressive and homicidal:[3] At times, the Man-Eater was inconceivably ferocious and inhuman, tearing apart his enemies,[2][12][6] or other of his tiger instincts could take control. The Man-Eater ended up discovering that there was a chemical imbalance in his brain,[6] explaining why he remembered both Murphy's and the tiger's memories,[3] as well as other memories that were possibly false and incorporated by the Coalition. This was overwhelmingly depressing for the Man-Eater, as he discovered he could not trust his own mind.[6]

From the moment Battlestar freed the Man-Eater by breaking the latter's shackles, the Man-Eater was grateful towards him[5] and to the Wild Pack, being willing to do efforts for them and keep the tiger's identity in check, as a way to honor their trust on him.[3] He also developed a friendship with Battlestar.[6]

Powers

Feline Physiology: The Man-Eater's feline physiology granted him a number of superhuman physical capabilities.

  • Fangs and Claws: The Man-Eater had strong jaws and claws, able to tear flesh with ease.[2] He could use these in combat, including slashing a person with a single blow[6] or savagely eating the flesh of an enemy.[12]
  • Superhuman Agility: The Man-Eater's hunter body could move quickly and accurately,[4] changing direction in combat if needed. His ability was enough to even confront flying enemies, even if he could not fly himself.[9]
  • Superhuman Durability: The Man-Eater could withstand damage and injury, recovering faster than most people. He was surprisingly able to keep a clear mind while doing so,[5] but due to his double mind, he sometimes forgot how he had been hurt.[6]
  • Superhuman Reflexes: The Man-Eater's reflexes were comparable to a cat's.[2]
  • Superhuman Senses: The Man-Eater has extraordinary senses. Notably, his eyes were eight times better than a normal human's[2] (and glow with a pinkish tone, changing shape to a more feline one, when he was especially using his sense as a tracker). His sense of smell was also good enough to track people (thou the scent trail could be lost if his target crossed a body of water)[3] or to track a female tiger in heat.[6]
  • Superhuman Speed: The Man-Eater could reach a running speed of 35 miles per hour when on fours, and leap 30 feet in a single bound,[2] even over a group of moving enemies.[9] He used his tail to balance on uneven terrain.[2] His speed was also applied to dodge and escape an enemy in combat, being able to avoid attacks from trained policemen like Blue and from the Sandman.[6] When moving on two legs, the Man-Eater was slower.[2]
  • Superhuman Stamina: Dr. Lubischt proved that the Man-Eater could engage into physically strenuous activities for extended periods without rest, to levels that no human could be able to match.[5]
  • Superhuman Strength: The Man-Eater could lift almost 500 pounds over his head.[2]
The Man-Eater's mind was a composite including memories of both Malcolm Murphy and the unnamed Siberian tiger that were merged into him. The human portion was predominant and in control most of the time,[2][3] but occasionally the tiger portion took over and directed the Man-Eater's body using instinctive behavior.[2][6] Even in this last case, the tiger's mind in the body was considerably smarter than a mere animal, thou the human side did not recall what had happened when he recovered control.[6] The human mind did his best to keep the tiger at bay.[3]

Abilities

Doctor in archaeology,[2] successful[1][11] and recognized for his field work.[3] The Man-Eater also had some hunting skills,[3] and was trained in combat.[10]

Weaknesses

Due to a chemical imbalance in his brain, the Man-Eater had access to both Malcolm Murphy's memories and the Siberian tiger's, and sometimes has trouble to know whose memories he's recalling. He also had fabricated memories, and this situation, combined with knowing that sometimes the tiger's mind took over his body, was enough to make him aghast.[6]

While extraordinarily endurant, the Man-Eater was not invulnerable: Silver Sable knocked him unconscious with a taser-rod in close quarters,[6] and Blizzard kept him away by freezing the Man-Eater's face with his armor powers.[25] He was also vulnerable to emotion control powers, as proven when the Leecher turned him into a purring kitty.[24]

As a feline hybrid, the Man-Eater avoided going near bodies of water such as lakes especially when the tiger mind was in control.[6] When the human mind was, the Man-Eater could go close enough to a river to drop another person in it.[3]

Notes

  • Man-Eater's profile in Avengers Assemble #1 says he has a PhD, so he should be addressed as Dr. Murphy. However, his staff in Silver Sable and the Wild Pack #19 calls him Mr. Murphy.
  • The Man-Eater's "word balloons" had a non-standard border, suggesting a weird voice. The border shape, however, changed depending on the issue.[5][16][4]

Trivia

  • Lubischt's test subjects all left for unknown destinations, except for the Man-Eater who joined the people who had rescued him.[5][10]
  • Two aspects of this characters' past that had been mentioned, but not in detail, include:
    • Lubischt mentioning that Murphy had made archaeological findings that would have been of interest to Adolf Hitler, including some mystic findings;[3]
    • and what exactly was the issue the Intruders had with him before taking off to the Genesis Coalition's headquarters that delayed them for exactly forty-seven minutes.[26]
