Lancelot du Lac[2] was one of the legendary Knight of the Round Table commanded by King Arthur who ruled England circa the 6th Century. They were the primary defenders of Camelot during the period. He and the other Knights defended the realm until the fall of Camelot.

The Knights have spawned many legends and stories throughout England and Europe and as such there are many accounts. The purposes of this article is to chronicle the activities of the Knights that have happened in the Earth-616 universe.

History

Early Life[]

Lancelot was the son of King Ban of Benwick, who was killed by Frankish King Claudas.

After his father's death, Lancelot was raised by the Lady of the Lake as if he was her own child. She gave him an enchanted ring that protected him from magic.[2]

Knights of the Round Table[]

Familiar with Arthur and with the power of the wizard Merlin, Lancelot du Lac travelled to England wanting to join King Arthur's Round table. He was sighted by time-travelling wizard Sise-Neg, who had reached that moment attracted by the great concentration of magic in Merlin. At a whim, Sise-Neg created a dragon from zilch, wanting to see a fight between dragon and knight. Sise-Neg's travelling companion Dr. Strange, fearing for the knight's life, used his own magicks to save Lancelot. Seeing his power, the grateful Lancelot assumed that Strange could only be Merlin and, after thanking him, went on to Camelot.[3]

Later, after Lancelot had arrived at Camelot and successfully joined the Knights of the Round Table as Sir Lancelot, the Knights and their King were unaware that Arthur's relative Mordred and his consort Morgan Le Fay plotted to take over the kingdom. However the royal wizard Merlin divined this treachery and called upon Sir Percy of Scandia, Mordred's nephew, to come to Camelot and act as his champion the Black Knight. In order to maintain a secret identity, Percy acted as a clumsy pacifist, whom the Knights thought very little of. Not long after Sir Percy's arrival, King Arthur went missing, prompting Lancelot, Sir Galahad and Sir Gawain to go out searching for the King, unaware that Mordred has secretly locked Arthur in the dungeons below the castle. They searched fruitlessly until the Black Knight rescued Arthur from the dungeon, but could not find evidence that implicated Mordred in the plot.[4] Lancelot and the knights later searched for King Arthur when he was captured by French-Sicilian pirates until the king was eventually rescued by the Black Knight.[5]

One day, King Arthur brought back to Camelot a wounded knight named Beliar that he had found in the forest. Beliar recovered with the help of Merlin and then was invited to stay, but began to repeatedly challenge Merlin, who was suspicious of him. Beliar tried to seduce Guinevere and nearly killed Lancelot in a jousting match. Eventually, Arthur realized that Belial posed a threat to Camelot and expelled him, but he kidnapped Guinevere. Arthur and Merlin defeated him and his demon father Asmodiar.[6]

Affair with Guinevere[]

Years later, when the New Excalibur superhero team was brought back in time by the Black Knight to stop the fall of Camelot,[7] Peter Wisdom got drunk at the gathering and hit on Queen Guinevere. This began a argument between Wisdom and Arthur which lead to Wisdom lunging at the King with a knife and the King knocking him out. Guinevere became distraught over Wisdom and her husband's actions, and sought out Sir Lancelot for sympathy. Lancelot later joined the Knights and the visitors from the future to defeat a horde of Makluan "Dragons".[8] After this event, Lancelot and Queen Guinevere would commence a long-lasting secret affair, a betrayal that would contribute to the fall of Camelot.[9]

In 537 AD, Lancelot rode with the Knights of Camelot led by Arthur and Merlin, when they encountered the Thunderbolts in a nearby woods. The Thunderbolts had been sent back in time, but the knights just saw them as a threat. The two groups battled and Merlin knocked out the Thunderbolts with magic and took them to the dungeon of Camelot where he kept a plethora of monstrous creatures.[10] When the Thunderbolts escaped the dungeons, Moonstone was blasted by a dragon and found Lancelot and Queen Guinevere in bed together. Lancelot tried to protect Guinevere from Moonstone, but she always disliked that he betrayed his king by sleeping with his wife and tossed him away like he was nothing. She then turned to Queen and told her to put some clothes on.[11]

Eventually, Morgan Le Fay came to Camelot and offered a truce to Arthur, who accepted in hopes of peace. It was during this time Arthur learned the truth about Lancelot having an affair with his wife Guinevere. This broke his heart but he decided to forgive them both. Mordred learned of the relationship and Arthur's forgiveness and decided to use this as an evidence to discredit his name. He called together the Knights of the Round Table and tricked them into barging in on the lovers and arrested them both for treason, but Lancelot was able to escape. With the truth revealed Arthur had no choice but to follow the law and sentenced the pair to death. Guinevere was to be burnt at the stake but at the last moment Lancelot rescued Guinevere and ran away with her.[12][13][14]

Notes

  • A man claiming to be Lancelot turned up over a thousand years later as the Bowman, guardian to Jade and the Firebird. It is uncertain whether they really are the same person.[14]
