History

Tyndareus was the father of Helen and the King of Sparta.

In fear of a civil war upon the hand of his daughter, Tyndareus had all contestants to swear an oath of loyalty to the one Helen would choose, and that if there were ever a war on her account, each would fight for the right of that man.
