Synopsis for "When The Mummy Walks"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Tales to Astonish #31

A man has a theory that the Egyptian pyramids where built as copies of single large pyramid that was built as a prison to contain some menace. He travels to Egypt to locate the lost pyramid and succeeds in finding it. Unknown to him, his assistant is plotting to kill him and grab the glory of the discovery for himself. When the man penetrates the inner chamber, he discovers a huge mummy lying on a stone slab. The assistant sets off explosive charges to seal the man in the crypt with the mummy, and the mummy stirs, awoken by the sound of the explosion. The mummy scoffs at his 'prison' theory, stating "I built this myself as I am an alien to your world, though my memory is clouded after my long sleep and I cannot recall why." The mummy attacks the man and he hides, but the mummy knocks a hole into the pyramid wall. When they emerge, the assistant dies of fright at the shock of the sight and the mummy recalls too late that this planet's atmosphere is poisonous to him which is why he built the pyramid shelter. The mummy topples dead in the sand and the man is saved.
