Dr. Johnathon Ohnn[8], was a scientist who found himself entangled in a series of events that led to his transformation into the enigmatic villain known as The Spot. He was hired by the Kingpin to replicate the Darkforce powers of the vigilante Cloak.[8] Dr. Ohnn inadvertently created a portal to another dimension, resulting in a radical physical change when he passed through it. Now covered in black spots that functioned as portable space warps, Ohnn took on the moniker of the Spot and faced off against Spider-Man. Despite initial victories, he faced defeats and setbacks, including imprisonment and capture by various organizations seeking to exploit his powers.[9]

Throughout his tumultuous journey, the Spot joined various groups such as the Spider-Man Revenge Squad[10] and M.O.D.O.K. 11. He also became involved in complex schemes orchestrated by figures such as Mister Negative[11] and Doctor Octopus[12] Despite his ambitions and schemes, the Spot's journey was fraught with challenges and ultimately ended in his demise at the hands of Carnage, who absorbed his powers.[13]

In a bid to enhance his powers further, the Spot embarked on a multiversal journey, seeking out alternate versions of himself and absorbing their abilities. This quest led him into confrontations with various Spider-Men from different realities, as well as encounters with alternate versions of his own self, culminating in a tense showdown with an alternate counterpart who outsmarted him.[14]

History

Early Years[]

Johnny Ohnn's early life was marked by academic excellence and personal challenges. Born with an insatiable curiosity and a keen intellect, he showed an aptitude for science from a young age. Growing up, Ohnn was fascinated by the mysteries of the universe and spent countless hours conducting experiments and tinkering with gadgets in his makeshift laboratory. His path to lead him to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.), where his brilliance quickly became apparent to both his peers and professors. It was during his time at M.I.T. that Ohnn formed a close bond with his roommate, Quentin Beck, who would later become known as the infamous Mysterio.[1] Despite his academic successes, Ohnn faced personal hardships, including a divorce that left him with a son, Wyatt to support. Despite the challenges of balancing fatherhood with his studies, Ohnn remained dedicated to his research and continued to excel in his academic pursuits.[15] Driven by a desire to make a difference in the world and to provide a better future for his son[15], Ohnn poured himself into his work, pushing the boundaries of scientific knowledge and innovation.[9]

The Spot[]

As a scientist working for the Kingpin, Dr. Ohnn was assigned to reproduce the radiation levels of the vigilante Cloak to find a way to artificially mimic his powers. Working late one night, he succeeded, creating a solid black circular portal. In doing so, however, the drain on the city's power became so great, a blackout washed over the city, causing the portal to shimmer and destabilize. Fearful of losing a once in a lifetime opportunity, Ohnn stepped into it; the shock of the transition caused him to pass out. He awoke floating weightlessly in a dimension which he initially assumed was Cloak's dark dimension. He soon realized however that the power shortage caused the portal to send him to a different dimension, a place of half darkness and half light. A seemingly infinite number of portals surrounded him in this place. Making swimming motions, he managed to find the original portal that brought him there and slipped back through it.[9]

When Ohnn emerged back in his lab, his body had undergone a radical transformation. The portals from the other dimension had adhered to his skin, covering him with black spots from head to toe. Realizing the spots were portable space warps, he started to think he might be able to use them to defeat anyone in battle. When Spider-Man and the Black Cat arrived to confront the Kingpin, he appeared before them and announced himself as the Spot. Spider-Man collapsed on the roof, laughing at the name.[9] The Spot ended up winning that first confrontation and warned the heroes to leave the Kingpin alone.[16] He later lost a second battle against Spider-Man because he was tricked into throwing too many of his spots as weapons and not keeping enough to defend himself with.[17]

Spider-Man Revenge Squad[]

Later, the Spot formed a short-lived team with Gibbon, Grizzly, and Kangaroo called the Spider-Man Revenge Squad. This team fell apart when Spider-Man carted the Spot and the Kangaroo to jail for bank robbery.[18][19]

Gideon Trust[]

Sometime later, the Spot was captured by an organization called The Gideon Trust and was forced to open a portal to the Negative Zone. The Gideon Trust hoped to investigate and exploit the natural resources of the Zone for their own purposes, but were defeated by the Fantastic Four who were trapped there at the time.[20][21]

The Cage[]

The Spot found himself incarcerated in a prison known as the Cage where his abilities were nullified, rendering him powerless. Despite this setback, Spot took it upon himself to mentor a fellow inmate, the Kangaroo, assisting him in learning to read. Despite his efforts, Spot's appeals for parole were repeatedly denied. Undeterred, he redirected his focus towards rehabilitation, aiding several other inmates in obtaining their GEDs. Eventually, Spot found himself sharing a cell with the formidable Tombstone. When Tombstone demanded Spot's assistance in gaining access to the prison library to exact vengeance upon Kangaroo, Spot steadfastly refused, even in the face of violence. Threatening to take his own life if denied parole once more, Spot remained resolute. However, Tombstone coerced him into compliance.[22]

Despite his acquiescence, Spot ultimately chose to uphold morality over self-preservation. He alerted the guards to Tombstone's intentions, preventing a potential tragedy. Spot then presented himself before the parole board, asserting his genuine transformation and newfound purpose as a force for good and education. Moved by his sincerity, the board granted him parole. Following Tombstone's subsequent escape, Spot demonstrated compassion even towards his former aggressor. He transported Tombstone to Switzerland for a life-saving heart operation. However, upon their reunion in the city, Spot's trust was betrayed as Tombstone callously snapped his neck.[4]

The Hand[]

Despite his apparent death, Spot would resurface years later. During a meeting with Slyde, Spot was killed by Elektra and a group of Hand ninja.[7] When Hydra, The Hand, and the mutant group Dawn of the White Light began a plot to end all life on Earth, they resurrected Ohnn and he joined an assault on the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier, which resulted in its destruction.[5] He was then killed again by Wolverine, as were most of the operatives The Hand were using in the attack.[6]

Johnathon Ohnn (Earth-616) and Peter Parker (Earth-616) from Amazing Spider-Man Vol 1 589 002

M.O.D.O.K. , a mastermind of manipulation, enticed a motley crew of criminals to a nondescript warehouse with the promise of untold riches. Among them stood Spot, who found himself surrounded by the likes of Armadillo, Puma, Mentallo, Rocket Racer, Chameleon, Living Laser and Nightshade. In the chaos that ensued as Spot attempted to steal the promised fortune, a skirmish erupted, pitting him against Rocket Racer before M.O.D.O.K. intervened, incapacitating Spot's cognitive functions, rendering him compliant.[23] Harnessing the unique talents of his assembled team, M.O.D.O.K. subjected them to rigorous training, their collective skills crucial for the heist of the Hypernova, an energy source coveted from the Infinicide, a futuristic extradimensional stronghold boasting infinite power.[24] The Spot, however, clandestinely brokered a deal with Temugin, the Mandarin's son, soliciting a hefty sum of fifteen million dollars in exchange for his betrayal. Yet, their initial attempt at the heist ended disastrously, with Spot's impetuous actions resulting in a shocking setback, leaving his cohorts bewildered and vexed by his recklessness. Despite Mentallo's absence, M.O.D.O.K. pressed forward, guiding the team onto the actual Infinicide. Amidst the perilous depths of the fortress, Spot seized the Hypernova, callously abandoning his comrades to their fate. Delivering the coveted prize to the Mandarin, Spot anticipated his reward, only to be ensnared by the dark machinations of the Darklight ring, imprisoned within the ominous confines of the "Spotted Dimension".[3]

Russian Mob[]

Occasionally, Ohnn would manage to project his image back into the normal world, and at one point he tried to contact some of his friends at the Bar with No Name to no avail. As he was being driven mad by his entrapment, John decided to concentrate on the mental image of his son Wyatt, and used him as a beacon that allowed him to come back to the normal world. However, John returned to learn that Wyatt had been caught in the fire of a butchered drive-by orchestrated by Russian mob boss Dmitri Ivankov and was in a coma. When Spot intercepted Ivankov at a meeting to kill him in revenge, but the criminal was saved by Spider-Man, who had happened to be at the scene gathering proof of his illicit activities. Spot continued attempting to murder Ivanov until Spider-Man stood his ground. When the hero made it clear that he intended to protect Ivankov's life, Spot handed him over a package addressed to Wyatt, as well as a letter explaining what had happened to him, and teleported away. However, because of his madness, the letter itself was only lines of dots. When Spider-Man delivered the package to the hospital where Wyatt was hospitalized, the package turned out to be a copy of Treasure Island that John used to read his son every night.[15]

Hood's Gang[]

Afterward, Spot was recruited by mob boss Mister Negative, another criminal whose powers derived from the Darkforce. In exchange for Spot's help in taking down the Maggia, Mister Negative pledged to find a cure to his powers. Ohnn then joined The Hood's Gang on Mister Negative's behalf and acted as a mole. When The Hood attempted to take over Mister Negative's territory, the Spot gave him an early warning, and also helped Mister Negative escape from the clutches of his adversary.[25]

Doctor Octopus[]

When Doctor Octopus set out to kidnap the newborn Stanley Osborn, he assembled an army of villains to do his bidding, including the Spot.[12] Spider-Man became tangled in the pursuit for the baby and, after the Chameleon led him to believe the infant had died,[26] he went on a rampage against the villains involved in Octopus' plan. He delivered the Spot webbed up to the police alongside Diablo and Overdrive.[27]

Exposing Donoratti's treachery, Daredevil triggered a fatal confrontation, prompting Spot to eliminate him before betrayal ensued. Despite Spot's attempt to flee, Daredevil pursued him through the portal, rendering the villain unconscious and delivering him to the authorities, while Gene Everett Wood captured the spectacle through his lens for the paper.[29] However, Spot's ordeal was far from over. Abducted from custody, he became the unwitting power source for a reconstructed machine that bestowed his teleportation abilities.[30] Exploiting Spot's energy, Lady Bullseye and her associate transformed a seasoned smuggler into the formidable Coyote, enhancing his teleportation prowess. For a time, Spot remained tethered to the machine, while Coyote utilized his newfound abilities for nefarious deeds. But Daredevil's intervention disrupted their operation. Liberating Coyote's captives by severing the machine's cables, Daredevil inadvertently unleashed Spot, who, struggling to control his powers, manifested as a grotesque amalgamation of limbs.[31] To contain the chaos, Daredevil utilized control collars to suppress Spot's abilities. Yet, as he overloaded Spot's powers, both he and Coyote vanished in a blinding flash, their fates uncertain.[28]

Jessica Jones[]

The Spot was contracted by Allison Greene to abduct Jessica Jones.[32] He ambushed Jessica, forcefully punching her through portals before seizing her and hurling her from a moving van.[33] Upon regaining consciousness, Jessica found herself bound to a chair while Spot relentlessly struck her until she managed to bite his arm. It was then that Greene unveiled herself and proceeded to interrogate Jones.[32] Subsequently, Spot conveyed a message to Jessica, instructing her to rendezvous with Greene outdside.[34] However, their plans were interrupted when Captain Marvel intervened, prompting Spot to engage in a skirmish with her while Jessica feigned cooperation with Greene momentarily. Ultimately, Jessica turned against Greene, and as Captain Marvel repelled Spot's attacks, Jessica Jones allied with her to thwart Greene's schemes.[35]

Sinister Six[]

Iron Spider assembled a formidable team comprising the Spot, Sandman, Bombshell, Hobgoblin and Electro, alias Francine Frye with a singular purpose: to steal advanced S.H.I.E.L.D. technology. Dubbed the "New Sinister Six," their collaboration signaled a troubling alliance for law enforcement.[36] In a meticulously devised scheme, Iron Spider orchestrated the theft of an abandoned S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier, leveraging the Spot's teleportation abilities to infiltrate the heavily guarded facility. While the team executed their heist, Iron Spider remained tight-lipped about the motive behind the heist, shrouding their intentions in secrecy. Bombshell, accompanied by her daughter to the operation. Exploiting a window of opportunity when the Red Hulk was away from his post.[37]

The Spot teleported the group to the Helicarrier. Their successful heist, however, didn't go unchallenged.[38] Miles Morales, and the Red Hulk launched a counterattack outside the Helicarrier.[39] The villains managed to evade capture, leaving Spot to ponder the identity of the prospective buyer for the stolen aircraft. Onboard the commandeered Helicarrier, tensions simmered as Iron Spider uncovered Hobgoblin's treachery and swiftly kicked him out of the team, casting doubt on the loyalty of the remaining members. The atmosphere grew increasingly precarious as Spot speculated on who might be the next to face Iron Spider's retribution. Their journey took an unexpected turn as they ventured to Latveria to negotiate a sale with Lucia von Bardas. However, their plans were foiled when the Champions intervened, sparking a fierce confrontation. Spot found himself embroiled in combat with Vivian Vision, exchanging blows amidst the chaos.[39] As the conflict escalated, Lucia's involvement escalated the stakes, leading to the eventual defeat of the Sinister Six at the hands of the Champions.[40]

Infinity War[]

With the power of the Mind Stone in his grasp, Turk Barrett assembled a motley crew of criminals: Sandman, Tombstone, Typhoid Mary, Bullseye and the Spot, to safeguard him during a crucial meeting. The Infinity Watch attended, each wielding one of the Infinity Stones. Harnessing the incredible capabilities of the Stones, they made a startling revelation that Thanos, had been slain. Suspicion and tension immediately permeated the assembly. With Thor and Iron Man adding their might to the hero's side, conflict erupted. In the chaos, Spot found himself locked in a fierce duel with Captain Marvel. The dramatic turn escalated further when Requiem made her grand entrance, presenting the decapitated head of Thanos. She was revealed to be Gamora and she ruthlessly claimed Star-Lord's stone killinh him in the process. However, the fabric of reality twisted once more and Star-Lord was brought back to life. Amidst the confusion, Spot, targeted Star-Lord, only to to be shot by Rocket Raccoon's firepower. Bullets tore through Spot's spatial anomalies, scattering chaos across the battlefield. Turk Barrett and swiftly retreated, leaving the scene.[41]

Bar With No Name Visits[]

The Spot found himself amidst the chaotic atmosphere of the Bar With No Name during a lively Spider-Man trivia contest, where an unexpected participant, the enigmatic Liar (Spider-Man in disguise), emerged victorious, much to the surprise of the attendees. Following the contest, tension escalated when Kingpin, offering a substantial reward, incited the villains present to target Boomerang, who had crossed the Kingpin in a previous deal.[42] In the ensuing turmoil, Spot and others turned against Boomerang and the Liar, swayed by Kingpin's proposition. However, Boomerang's resourcefulness allowed them to escape, utilizing a well-timed bomberang.[43] Subsequently, Spot was seen at one of the gatherings known as the Pop-Up With No Name[44] . Later on, he returned to the Bar With No Name, seeking the camaraderie of his fellow super-villain.[45]

Winter Soldier[]

The Spot was dispatched on a mission to eliminate Seth, a former S.H.I.E.L.D. operative who betrayed an Eastern European syndicate. Despite Seth's attempts to disappear in the US, his pursuers tracked him down. The task fell upon the Winter Soldier and RJ, a former Hydra member turned ally. Upon locating Seth's hideout, the Spot launched a brutal assault, utilizing his otherworldly portals ripping Bucky's arm off. The confrontation escalated as they were drawn into the unpredictable realm of the Spot's dimensions. With portals opening from all angles, the battle became chaotic and relentless. In a daring move, RJ leaped into action, showering the Spot with a barrage of gunfire, providing the opening for the Winter Soldier to reclaim his lost arm. With his strength restored, the Winter Soldier seized the opportunity and punched the Spot. Bound and silenced, the defeated Spot was delivered into the hands of the authorities, bringing an end to his reign of terror.[46]

Darkforce[]

Following Hydra's short-lived takeover of the United States, during which the terroris organization encased Manhattan in an impenetrable dome of Darkforce, the Kingpin became fascinated with the idea of weaponizing this otherworldy energy as well. To this end, Fisk had Spot captured and experimented on to amplify and extract his connection to the Darkforce Dimension. When Kingpin and Norman Osborn joined forces to capture the demonic entity Kindred, Spot was used to encase the demon in a Darkforce construct.[47] When Osborn decided to free Kindred, he enlisted Spot to free the demon in exchange for his own freedom.[48]

Carnage[]

He was later attacked in his lab by Carnage and The Artist, the symbiote wanting to take his powers for itself.[49] Spot attempted to plead for his life and, when Carnage refused to oblige, simply evade Carnage's attacks. The Artist grabbing Spot's leg, however, weighed him down and distracted him enough for Carnage to predict which spot Ohnn would emerge from, seize him, and rip him apart, subsequently absorbing his remains and his powers; Ohnn's disembodied head, however, claimed he would return from within the Spotted Dimension eventually.[13]

Deadpool[]

Tony Stark, masquerading as Doctor Doom, clandestinely enlisted the Spot to steal a crucial computer drive from the Fantastic Four. The Spot, in turn, engaged the services of attorney Roger for legal representation. Employing his teleportation abilities, Spot infiltrated the The Da Vinci Code Hall of Justice to abscond with a hard drive containing patents belonging to Iron Man and Mister Fantastic, wrestling it from the grasp of the Go-Betweener's security detail before engaging in combat with the likes of the Invisible Woman, Electro, and Deadpool who was disguised as Stilt-Man. Subsequently, the Spot successfully evaded capture, making off with the valuable drive. Roger orchestrated a rendezvous with the Spot within Central Park, but their meeting was interrupted when Spot launched an assault, creating a rift that whisked Roger away to an unknown location. Engaging in combat with Deadpool and the Invisible Woman, the Spot eventually evaded capture once more, resolute in his mission to profit from the stolen data. However, the tables turned when the Invisible Woman and Deadpool tracked the Spot to a meeting with "Doctor Doom." In a tense confrontation, Invisible Woman trapped Spot within a force bubble, compelling his retreat under the watchful gaze of "Doctor Doom" and Deadpool.[50]

A Power Trip through Multiverse[]

Sometime later, Ohnn discovering he could be more than who he currently was decided to enact a new plan, using his spots he went to multiple unknown universes and gave various alternate versions of himself his power and then killed them before they could use it further powering himself. Eventually he went to Earth-1048 where he met the Spider-Man of that world, not wanting Spider-Man to stop him he offered him a deal that if he helped him, Spot would allow him to go back in time to fix any mistakes he had made in the past, the Spider-Man of this world still grieving his Aunt May agreed. Later Ohnn returned to Earth-616 where after having killed another of his variants placed the corpse inside a super-powered morgue.[51][52][53]

Johnathon Ohnn (Earth-616) from Spider-Man Unlimited Infinity Comic Vol 1 2 001

After having done this, Ohnn later went to Roxxon for unknown reasons but was caught there by his reality's Spider-Man, Spider-Man proceeded to fight the Spot. During the fight Spot admitting to having murdered his alternate self but didn't think it mattered given who his alternate counterpart was, however Spider-Man stated that murder no matter who it is or where it takes place is agreed as bad anywhere. Spot curiously asked who even sent Spider-Man after him, Spider-Man accidentally let slip that Doctor Doom had sent him stating that Spot was putting the entirety of reality at risk. Spot believed this to be a lie and that the real reason Doom had sent Spider-Man was because Spot had become a threat to Doom's power. Now knowing Spider-Man and him had no real reason to fight and being on a time crunch himself, he offered Spider-Man a deal like he did Spider-Man's Earth-1048 self to go back in time and fix any mistakes he made.[52][54]

Spider-Man refused to which Spot tried to persuade him to consider it, however Spider-Man still refused and listed his reasons given he's had experience with time travel and even if he did accept the offer the people he'd do it for would be disappointed in him for doing so. Seeing that Spider-Man was not going to give up and was clearly too experienced in manners such as time travel he decided to bring out Earth-1048's Spider-Man to fight Spider-Man. Spot watched as the two Spider-Men fought but upon seeing them start to agree, Spot swiftly left to another reality where he gave powers to and murdered another of his alternate selves. After Spot arrived in a reality alternate to that of Earth-1048 known as Earth-1053 where Spider-Man had allowed Doctor Octopus to put the neural link on him.[54][55][56]

Whether or not Spot killed this reality's version of himself is unknown, however he informed the Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus of this world that they could cure all diseases by using Mister Negative's abilities and warned them the other 2 would soon arrived. After Ohnn left into Earth-8311 and a reality where Peter Parker was homeless due to not gaining any spider-powers, if he killed his alternate selves in either of these realities is unknown but he soon left afterwards.[56][57]

As Spot continued to jump into alternate realities to further empower himself, knowing his reality's Spider-Man and 1048-Spider-Man were still after him he would go into realities where Spider-Man was evil and warn them about their alternate counterparts to get them to fight them. Eventually Ohnn himself would land in another reality where it had appeared his alternate counterpart had failed the experiment that gave them their abilities. So he went to this Ohnn's place of work and after revealing who he was offered his abilities to this Ohnn, the alternate Ohnn accepted and Ohnn began the transfer and then revealed to the alternate Ohnn he had tricked him. However the alternate Ohnn expected this and instead began to kill Ohnn, Ohnn was shocked by this.[58]

The alternate Ohnn revealed that he was the one who had tricked Ohnn as he had at one point gained their powers but then lost them, so knowing of Ohnn's plan recreated the experiment to attract Ohnn to him. Fortunately for Ohnn, before his alternate self could kill him, his reality's Spider-Man and 1048-Spider-Man arrived to save him and stop him. [58]
