Professional History

John Morelli, sometimes credited as Jack Morelli,[3] (and sometimes even as "Squid")[4] joined Marvel in the 1980s mostly as a letterer, but he also did some work as a writer. He also worked for other publishers, including DC Comics and Archie Comics.[3] His work for that last publisher earned him the 2015 Harvey Award to the best letterer for his work in the series Afterlife with Archie.[3][5]

Morelli as Spider-Man.

Being in a fit shape, Morelli posed as Spider-Man for the photo in the cover of Marvel Team-Up #128 (1983), and as Poltergeist for the photo in the cover of Spider-Woman #50 (1983). Both photos were taken by Eliot R. Brown and featured other Marvel staffers costumed as other superheroes.

Morelli's work included the design of many comic-book logos.[3] Morelli also obtained recognition because he developed the computer font used by John Byrne for his own works. In 1998, Byrne recognized that he used the "Byrne Robotics" font so often that he was paying Morelli a fee.[3][6]

In 2007, Morelli worked with Mark Chiarello to publish the book Heroes of the Negro Leagues (Abrams, Inc.), about African-American baseball players, reprinting Chiarello's illustrations with new text provided by Morelli. This book was recognized by Amazon as the second best book on sports in 2007.[3]
