Much like his comic counterpart, Jameson is the son of newspaper mogul J. Jonah Jameson and an astronaut for NASA. John Jameson visited his father a week before his launch date into space. His father took him to a benefit party for one of L. Thompson Lincoln's charities, but John lamented that he would have rather they had just gone together for a steak dinner. Just as they were about to leave, the Green Goblin crashed the party and held the guests hostage. John attacked one of the Goblin's henchmen, but was hit by the Goblin's laser. He later helped Spider-Man find a pumpkin bomb Goblin hid in the chandelier and warned his father not to report his heroism as it would lead to an investigation that could get him pulled from the space mission.[1]

He successfully left for space the following week. The night before Halloween, a stray meteor hit the space shuttle, damaging the heat shield. Despite the difficulty, John managed to safely land the shuttle, bringing a strange alien symbiote with him.[2] Sometime later, it was revealed that John was infected with spores from the symbiote, which caused him to become bigger, stronger, and more agile, and Curt Connors developed a special suit for him to handle his new powers. At the request of his father, he becames the superhero Colonel Jupiter, and tried to fight Spider-Man, who was framed for crimes by Venom. Although John believed he is doing the right things, the spores slowly drove him insane, and Spider-Man was forced to kill the spores by electrocuting John.

John, though cured, was still mentally unstable and was admitted to Ravencroft Asylum, where he craved for more power. His father blamed Spider-Man for the tragedy, saying that he destroyed his son.[3]
