- First appearance of all characters. Characters based on the work of novelist Edgar Rice Burroughs.
- Flashback sequences adapted from the 1917 Burroughs' novel A Princess of Mars.
- A two page editorial by Marv Wolfman titled "Welcome Back, Carter" explains that the series takes place between paragraphs 3 and 4 in chapter 27 of A Princess of Mars. There is a nine year gap in the story at that point which had never before been fully explored.
