Jacques Girard was a financier and model seeker who ended up in a romantic relationship with Silver Sable. The Foreigner, jealous of his ex-wife's new lover, implicated Girard in a series of international crimes of conspiracy and murder, while also humiliating Sable by plastering a nude photography of her done in an international pornographic magazine and making it look like that Girard was responsible. Girard claimed to be innocent of the latter, and Sable eventually trusted him.

Framed on the conspiracy charges, Girard was arrested by the CIA and sent to Ryker's Island. There, he cut a deal with his captors to avoid an imminent penalty. This led to Sable being incarcerated and ending their relationship.

History

Jacques Girard was a successful[2] financier[1] and model seeker.[3] Girard dedicated part of his assets to financing the Surray Trade Commission, which depended on the government of the United States.[4]

Girard began a romantic relationship with Silver Sable, a beautiful Symkarian mercenary and leader of the Wild Pack.[3] Suitably impressed with the beau, Sable didn't bother to investigate Girard's past. Girard believed that Sable could become the best model in the world, and he offered her several business agreements in that regard[5] while at the same time they got to know each other in detail[2] and shared recreational activities. Sable, a woman who rarely allowed herself to indulge in pleasure, especially appreciated that Girard had managed to make her smile,[3] in addition to being her lover.[6]

At Girard's insistence, Sable agreed to pose for Bouvier's newest design photo spread[3] as long as she could wear only white or silver.[2] Girard and Sable celebrated this agreement with a vacation to Kauai, Hawaii. Although she enjoyed his company, she suddenly returned to work to pursue war criminal Franz Lubischt in South America when she received a message.[3]

Shortly after, Sable posed for the photo shoot at her own home, Castle Sable, with Girard present. Sable's business manager Morty entered the set to tell Sable about one of her enemies, since she had requested to be informed about that case immediately; Sable even considered chasing Morty away to spend time with Girard, until Morty told her what it was about. She kissed Girard goodbye and chased away the accountant Mr. Lee. Girard told her that she would not stay at Castle Sable if she was not there.[2]

the Foreigner, crimelord, international assassin, and Sable's ex-husband, wanted Girard to stop being Sable's lover, but did not want to kill Girard. Instead, the Foreigner manipulated a series of events to have Sable apparently appear in a pornographic magazine spread,[7] Petshop,[5] including a centerfold.[8] The model was another woman, and Foreigner expected Girard to take the blame, jeopardizing his relationship with Sable. The Foreigner also looked for other ways to harm Girard.[7]

Meanwhile, the magazine was published, and several Wild Pack members were able to view it. One of them, Powell,[5] who had tried to woo Sable in vain,[9] quickly surmised that Girard had been behind it. Initially unaware of the magazine, Sable continued to enjoy her dates with Girard, although she was occasionally distrustful of some of his businesses.[5] It was on a Wild Pack humanitarian aid operation in Somalia when Powell confronted Girard on the magazine; Girard claimed to be innocent. Sable then saw the magazine and became ashamed and angry, ordering Girard to get away from her.[7]

Back in the United States, the Foreigner used a disguise to meet with Girard and convince him to withdraw his support for the Surray Trade Commission and dedicate it to someone named Gonzales. The Foreigner convinced him that the current government would not be grateful to Girard for his support and would simply dismantle Girard's interests and associated groups, while Gonzales guaranteed that Girard's investment would be doubled. Girard had his team analyze the offer, then decided to support it[4] and diverted funds to the Gonzales trade commission, which was legal. Throughout the operation, Girard made deals with arms dealer Franco Antonelli, unaware that agents from the CIA were following him and gathering evidence. against him. The CIA also falsified evidence of Girard shooting an ambassador.[1] Girard would later admit to making deals that were later modified, but he denied hurting or killing anyone,[10] despite which the CIA obtained or fabricated enough to be able to accuse him of conspiracy and murder.[1]

Unaware of the conspiracy against him, Girard tried to resume his relationship with Sable while denouncing Petshop magazine for fraud. His efforts were fruitful, as Sable became convinced of his innocence and resumed her romance with him.[11] On their day off, Sable and Girard went on a date in New York City, having dinner at A Tavern On the Green. Girard knew that Sable's company had suffered a brutal embezzling by the accountant Lee, and offered his support. During dinner, CIA agents Trenton Sanders and Rosten arrested Girard at the restaurant, and when Sable attempted to intimidate them, they threatened her. Sanders and Rosten took Girard and Sable to a CIA safehouse, where he acknowledged having invested in the Gonzales trade commission but denied involvement in the crimes. Still, the CIA arrested Girard on charges of conspiracy and murder,[1] later adding treason as well,[12] yet they let Sable go. Promising retaliation against those agents if she could prove she was a setup, Sable returned to the Symkarian Embassy in New York, where Powell observed that, contrary to expectations, she was returning without Girard.[1] Girard was imprisoned on Ryker's Island Maximum Security Penitentiary.[10]

Sable recruited lawyer Foggy Nelson to take care Girard's defense, covering the expenses, though she also had to convince Nelson. Sable put her own team of investigators on the case,[12] and concluded that the Foreigner had framed Girard, although she had a hard time getting evidence. The Foreigner met with Sable surreptitiously, she accused him of being behind Girard's problems (and Lee's embezzlement), and he did not deny it, but simply said that she should not be with Girard, that he knew about the centerfold, and that she'd never get the evidence she needed.[8]

Meanwhile, Nelson met with Girard but was having trouble moving forward with the case: The government had too much evidence while Girard was barely cooperating with Nelson. Girard told Nelson that Sable was the reason for his problems,[10] so Girard made a deal with Sanders and Rosten, telling them countless details about Sable and her company, Silver Sable International they could use for their ends[13] or making Sable's life harder.[14] Off the record, Rosten admitted they had laid a trap on Girard to put pressure on him, and make him collaborate with the CIA in their plot to jail Sable, with the excuse of national security.[13] Although Girard told the government everything he knew about Sable and helped them access her company records,[14] that was not enough for Rosten[13] and they built a case accusing Sable even with false evidence.[14]

Girard was released, but disappeared shortly after, while Sable was sent to prison; she found it hard to believe that Girard had betrayed her like that. However, Sable's allies managed to release her shortly after, ironically with the help of Foreigner. Sable believed that the CIA was seeking to punish her because she had refused to carry out assassinations for them, and that Foreigner managed to get her out of jail by accepting those assignments.[14]

Trivia

  • Just after the publication of the Petshop centerfold, Girard interrupted a dance with Sable to pick up a phone call from Moscow; Sable deduced it was not a mere business call,[5] but we never discovered what it was about.
  • Wild Pack member Powell openly disdained Girard,[7] partly because Powell had openly tried to seduce Sable,[9] but it could also be related with Powell being a racist.[16]
  • When Sable was sent to jail due to Girard's actions, Sable's teammate Crippler asked for one hour with Girard, possibly to torture him and leave him useless for the CIA; but Morty refused to authorize that.[14]
