The Jabari are a small tribe of Wakandans with a special connection to the White Apes and the White Gorilla God who live in the country's north, called the Jabari-Lands.[5]

History

The Jabari were once known by another name, but began calling themselves the Jabari in honor of one of their greatest warriors, who gave his life for his people.[6]

Since ancient times, the Jabari have been rivals to the ruling Panther Tribe. When Wakandan king Xe'Ntra the Bold was manipulated by the Hyena Clan into threatening war with the neighboring Mohanndan people, the Jabari were the only one of Wakanda's tribes to oppose the war. Their drummers were able to counteract the power of the Resurrection Altar being used to manipulate the King and his dead lover Nanti, allowing the Jabari warrior Mamadou Fall to best the ruler in ritual combat and become the first Black Panther of Jabari origin. This is considered to be the reason that despite their rivalry with the ruling tribe, the Jabari have never been fully outlawed; their presence in the country provides a voice that can balance out the absolute power of the King.[7]

Modern day[]

After the death of King T'Chaka, a war erupted over the Jabari's faith, which was considered blasphemous by the followers of the majority Panther Cult; when the Jabari began plans to conquer all of Wakanda, the new king T'Challa condemned the tribe and dispersed them throughout the country, sectioning their Crystal Forest home away from the rest of Wakanda. In truth, however, this banishment was a ploy from T'Challa to hide the presence of his his time-displaced future self, who was being kept in the cool Jabari-Lands to prevent succumbing to a deadly aneurysm.[4]
