History

Exiled[]

Illyana Rasputin was a mutant who went by the name Magik and possessed teleporting abilities as well as the Soulsword. She was forcibly recruited by the Timebroker to join the Exiles,[1] a group of six individuals from different realities who were in charge of chaotically influencing events across the Multiverse to prevent its possible collapse. Each Exile was motivated by the Timebroker with a revelation of a dreadful incident that would came to be were they not collaborative.[2] In Magik's case, she would either become unhinged from her time or murder her entire family.[3]

Magik replaced the Exiles' former leader Blink, who was expelled from the group,[1] sparking tensions in the team. On her first mission with the Exiles, Magik emerged on a world where Japan was under attack from Moses Magnum. The Exiles' mission was to kill the Avengers, something they morally opposed to. As the rest of the group chose to save the locals, Magik volunteered to brief the Avengers about the situation. However, she actually planned to accomplish their assigned mission. In cold blood, she murdered the Avengers, facing a version of her brother Colossus,[4] who unexpectedly defected and sacrificed himself to help her complete the mission.[5] Her actions caused the Exiles to jump to their next assignment. As a result, the Exiles' leader Mimic confronted her over her unheroic attitude.[6]

In their next mission, the team had to prevent Carter Ghazikhanian and Nicholas Gleason from being killed by Havok, who had been taken over by the mind of an alternate version of himself. At the Xavier Institute, the Exiles clashed with the X-Men, who were unaware of the issue. As Ghazikhanian was hurt by Havok, the two teams realized they shared an enemy. Magik and her teammate Sunfire went to Archangel in order to use his blood to heal the injured kid.[6] Magik made an attempt to take Archangel's blood by force, but was outmatched and swiftly knocked unconscious.[7] Archangel took possession of Magik's Soulsword to join the fight against Havok alongside the Exiles and the X-Men. Magik regained consciousness after Havok was extirpated of the evil influence. As the mission was completed, Magik forged herself a new Soulsword.[8]

King Hyperion[]

Over the following missions, Magik demonstrated such brutality to the point of worrying her teammates. In their next task, Magik and the Exiles were tricked by Lord Crichton. Magik used her Soulsword to defeat the vampire king Captain America and his Avengers, which caused Crichton to ascend as the new vampire king. He used a magic spell to disrupt the Exiles' teleportation and sent each member off to various realities for different periods of time. Magik was dumped in an ocean for a couple of minutes before being rescued by the Timebroker.[9] Upon reassembling, the Exiles were immediately sent to a reality where the Fantastic Four had just been born. Their mission was to prevent any casualties. Magik cast a spell to shield the Exiles from cosmic rays and assisted in defending New York City from a rampaging Thing.[10] The mission turned out to be a disaster when Mimic, who had been infected by the Brood, during his time away led to Sunfire's death. Blink returned to the Exiles to replace Sunfire.[11]

Magik reveals why she's in the Exiles

With Blink back to their ranks, the Exiles marched to fight a rogue group of other reality-jumpers, Weapon X. Only six of the members from either team could continue on to other missions. In this occasion, Magik revealed to her teammate Morph the consequences she would face were she not co-operative with the Exiles.[3] The Exiles' main opponent was the perverse King Hyperion, who had rebelled against the Timebroker. Magik betrayed her teammates by mortally wounding Sasquatch and providing Hyperion with information about the Timebroker's mission. Her betrayal cost her her life, since Hyperion murdered Magik by breaking her neck to test if that would permanently reduce the numbers of the Exiles and Weapon X.[12] Magik's body was stored within the Panoptichron under the care of the Timebreakers until the Exiles took over the place and returned her body to her family for a funeral.[13]
