History

The Four Horsemen of Apocalypse, the lineup was composed of mutants that submitted themselves to the so-called Mutant Cure, developed by Dr. Adler (actually Mystique in disguise). The "Cure" process transformed the four mutants: Autumn Rolfson (Famine), Plague (Pestilence), Abraham Kieros (War), and Archangel (Death) into altered mutants under the control of Apocalypse. Together they attack a peace conference in Paris where Apocalypse makes his presence known to the world.

The Horsemen lay waste to several global areas; Famine attacks farms seeking to destroy crops, War attacks military bases and turns their weapons against them, and Death strikes at a dam causing significant innocent deaths no doubt. The X-Men arrive in Paris to find Pestilence spreading sickness and disease. Storm and Cyclops manage to defeat her but the rest of The Horsemen arrive. Famine keeps Cyclops and Storm occupied while War almost seriously injures Wolverine but luckily he is saved by Gambit. The Horsemen retreat to Stonehenge where Rogue has foolishly come to face Apocalypse alone.

Apocalypse, disappointed in his Horsemen, toys with Rogue and almost kills her with his energy blasts. Luckily the rest of the X-Men arrive and clash with the Horsemen once more; War blasts Gambit and Wolverine but he's tripped up by a beam from Cyclops, Jean easily neutralizes Pestilence and in the skies above Famine narrowly evades Storm's lightning bolts.

As Death is about to attack Rogue sneaks up and touches him, absorbing his memories and energy, nullifying Apocalypse's power over him. Death is distraught by the violent reality of what he has become and lashes out at the Horsemen, defeating them. Apocalypse escapes and so to does Death, flying off into the night, ashamed.

The four-part episode Beyond Good and Evil featured another team of Horsemen, created by Apocalypse during his time in Ancient Egypt. The style of these Horsemen reflected their Egyptian origins. In the episode The Fifth Horseman, Fabian Cortez (at that point a follower of Apocalypse) creates a team called Hounds rather than Horsemen. One of them is Caliban, who resembled his appearance as "Death" in the comic books.
