History

Origins[]

Heather McDaniel was a Canadian scientist, conducting research on the cure to cancer. While experimenting with gamma radiation on what she believed to be a hole in the ozone layer located in the Arctic Circle, Heather accidentally opened a portal to the realm of the Great Beasts where the creature known as Tanaraq had been imprisoned. A dying Heather made a deal with Tanaraq; he would save her life, and grant her the powers of Sasquatch, but in exchange, she would help him cross over and he would one day claim her body for his own.[4]

As part of the deal, Heather forgot her encounter with Tanaraq, and went about her life believing that she had received her powers from the gamma radiation.[4]

With her new abilities she was invited to join the Canadian super-team Alpha Flight. Her first project was code named Project Lazarus; Alpha Flight had found a Wild Man possessing mutant powers roaming the wilderness. Having lost his mind completely, Heather helped nurse the Wild Man back to health and sanity. In time the Wild Man, in truth named Logan, regained his grip on humanity. He joined Alpha Flight and he and Heather became romantically involved. Within a year they were married, but two years later, Weapon X activated a dormant chip hidden in Logan's adrenal gland, driving him insane. Heather was forced to kill him to stop his murderous ramapge.[5]

She mourned her husband for years, but colleague James Hudson managed to bring her back from the brink. In time, the two of began a relationship and were eventually married.[5]

Exiles[]

Eventually, Heather was ripped from her reality by the mysterious man known as the Timebroker. He told her she had become unhinged from time and would have to help fix the broken chains of reality. If she didn't help, her husband would be burned to death in a tragic accident in her reality.[6]

As Sasquatch, Heather would help the Exiles complete many missions, saving many realities. Following a fight with the Vampire Avengers the team was separated by a magical spell cast by a dying Union Jack. Sasquatch and Morph were dropped into a reality at the exact moment that reality's Logan escaped from the Weapon X Program. The feral Logan attacked her and Morph, forcing Heather to fight back. Afraid for Morph's life, Sasquatch knocked him out and hid him. Wolverine quickly tracked Sasquatch, but before the two could fight, Heather reverted to her human form. Calmed by seeing Heather's true self, the two briefly embraced before Heather was teleported away and re-united with the Exiles.[5]

While visiting a reality that had fallen under a spell by Kulan Gath, reverting New York City and its denizens into the Hyborian Age, Heather found herself powerfully affected by the magical nature of this reality, causing Tanaraq to exert his influence and causing her memories of her deal with him to return. Despite resisiting transforming into her Sasquatch form for much of the mission, Heather was ultimately forced to do so, unleashing Tanaraq once more.[4]

Tanaraq claimed Heather's body for his own, as per the deal they made. The Exiles were loath to work with the beast, who murdered indiscriminiately to complete their missions, and began working on getting their friend back. While on Earth-50358, Tanaraq forced the Exiles to go in search of various supervillain scientists who could help them trace their signals back to the Timebroker, so that Tanaraq could force him to return him to his home reality.[7]

Desperate to stop Tanaraq, the Exile Beak contacted Shaman of Alpha Flight for help in stopping Tanaraq. Shaman had already been contacted by the Tanaraq of his own reality, who was unhappy to see another version of himself in his reality. The Exiles and Shaman managed to set a trap, banishing Tanaraq to the realm of the Great Beasts, where the Tanaraq of Earth-50358 imprisoned him.[7]

Heather was now free of Tanaraq and herself again, but lost the power to transform into Sasquatch.[7] Heather was taken out of duty, and found herself imprisoned in stasis in the Crystal Palace, the home of the Timebroker. The Crystal Palace had fallen under the control of Hyperion, a former member of the Exiles' sister-group Weapon X, who had gone rogue and attempted to subvert the Timebroker's plans. The Exiles were able to free Heather and stop Hyperion, and soon learned that the Timebroker did not exist.[8] [9]

The truth was that an insectoid race later dubbed the Timebreakers had stumbled upon the Crystal Palace and inadvertently caused damage to the multiverse while trying to learn how it worked. Desperate to fix this damage, they had conscripted superhumans from across the multiverse to create the Exiles and Weapon X and misled them so that they would fix the damage.[9]

Heather assumed control of the Timebreakers' operations and began acting as a mission control for the team, remaining at the Crystal Palace and giving the team information on their missions.[10] When a mission led a universe to be destroyed and re-created, Heather lost contact with the Exiles. Due to a difference in the flow of time, it would be six months for Heather before the Exiles returned. In that time, Heather succumbed to alcoholism and grief over their presumed deaths. Dispondent, the Timebreakers abandoned the Crystal Palace, cutting their losses. Heather eventually cleaned herself up and fixed the damage she had caused to the Crystal Palace, but was unable to carry on with the Exiles' mission and returned to her home reality.[11]

When the Exiles visited her on her Earth, they learned she was pregnant and didn't plan on returning to the team.[11]

Notes

  • Mentioned: Exiles #33, 57
  • Heather makes reference to having a "mutant metabolism" that allows her to eat copious amounts of food without gaining weight. However, this reference was made long after Heather lost the powers of Sasquatch. Since no other mention is made of Heather being a mutant, this is most likely a continuity error.[14]
