Quote1 Whatever comes our way, whatever battle we have raging inside us, we always have a choice. My friend, Harry taught me that. He chose to be the best of himself. It's the choices that make us who we are and we can always choose to do what's right. Quote2

History

Harry is one of Peter Parker's high school classmates practically his only friend, who resents the fact that his father spends more time at his job than being with him and seems to understand the brilliant Peter is better than him. This is evident when Norman learns that Peter is able to understand his nanotechnology papers, wins the science award, as well as expresses his desire to make his own way in the world. Harry is constantly trying to live up to his father's expectations, including trying to make girlfriend M.J. look stunning. He decides to date Mary Jane despite his knowledge of Peter's interest in her and fails to tell him. Later, he says that Peter never made a move. In the past, Harry protected Peter from bullying and Peter tutored him in science. After graduation, Harry's father gets them a loft apartment next to the university. Early in the movie, Peter becomes Spider-Man and Norman becomes the host of Green Goblin, but Harry remains unaware that the two are his best friend and his father. As he is growing more terrified of the Green Goblin persona, Norman begs Harry for forgiveness for not being a good father and the two reconcile somewhat after Harry's break-up with M.J..

However, the Green Goblin is killed by his own glider after attempting to kill Spider-Man. Following Norman's last wish to not let Harry know about his villainous split-personality, Spider-Man removes the Goblin's costume and returns Norman's body to the Osborn mansion. Harry, seeing Spider-Man carrying Norman's body, assumes that Spider-Man has murdered his father. Harry grabs a gun from a drawer, but Spider-Man leaves before Harry can react. At Norman's funeral, a brooding Harry tells Peter that Spider-Man will pay for the death of his father. In the film interpretation, Harry is more of an odd duck who lacks the popularity that he had in the comics. He is also more angry and bitter in his relationship with his father, though the two begin rebuilding their relationship before Norman's death.[2]

Harry takes over his late father's career but his business and unresolved resentment towards Peter, who he feels is siding with Spider-Man rather than him, cause him to slowly spiral into alcoholism. His vendetta against Spider-Man brings him into alliance with Doctor Octopus, whom Harry had funded in his research back when Ock was the innocent scientist, Doctor Otto Octavius. Harry agrees to supply Ock with the tritium that he needs for his experiments if the villain will hunt down and deliver Spider-Man. After a long battle, Spider-Man is brought before Harry, keeping his word by giving up the tritium, who prepares to kill Spider-Man with a dagger. Before he does so, however, he removes Spider-Man's mask and is shocked to see Peter's face. A dazed Peter Parker regains consciousness, and he convinces Harry to let him go and rescue Mary Jane Watson.

Later, a confused Harry hallucinates, seeing his father's image in a mirror, demanding that Harry avenges him. Harry shatters the mirror, only to find his father's hidden lair, with the Green Goblin equipment within. The scene starts with Harry going through a spooky and empty walkway. He runs into the Goblin mask and is terrified until he backs up into the shelves holding pumpkin bombs, realizing that his father was the Green Goblin. He turns and sees the serum that made his father the Green Goblin. He steps out of the shadows as he walks closer to the Goblin Glider with the Green Goblin's theme playing and the camera zooming back. His last appearance in the movie is at Mary Jane's wedding ceremony, being the only guest wearing a green bow tie, during which she runs away for Peter.[3]

Later, Harry becomes a super villain, as well as later, a super hero. Though remaining unnamed throughout the film, this new villain is credited as the New Goblin and is jokingly referred to by Peter Parker as "Little Goblin junior". The New Goblin wears a dark costume with some green features. In contrast to the Green Goblin costume worn by his father (while under the Green Goblin's control), which was intended to, among other things, terrorize people in general, Harry wears a more streamlined suit that is not meant to terrorize anyone, as well as is constructed for the sole purpose of defeating and killing Spider-Man. He doesn't wear a demonic-looking mask like his father (while under the Green Goblin's control), but retractable facial gear consisting of a pair of reflective green goggles and a green mouthpiece, similar to a paint-ball mask.

After an intense battle with Spider-Man, Harry Osborn is knocked out and given amnesia to the point where he doesn't recall Peter being responsible for his father's death. As such, the two work on rekindle their old friendship. However, when Mary Jane and Peter have difficulties in their relationship, she goes to Harry to be friends. Although they kiss, Mary Jane does not want to have a relationship with Harry. Visions of Norman Osborn persist, forcing Harry to remember. Taking Norman's advice of attacking the heart, Harry attempts to destroy Peter and M.J.'s relationship by blackmailing M.J. to dump Peter and claim that Harry is dating her. Otherwise, Peter will die. This leads to yet another brutal fight with Peter (currently under the Symbiote's influence) at his mansion, which ends with Peter mocking Harry on his persona and his relationship with his father. In retaliation, Harry throws a pumpkin bomb towards Peter, but Peter anticipates this, redirecting the bomb at Harry with his webbing. The resulting explosion mutilates the right side of Harry's face.

His death after his last moments with Peter and MJ

After Sandman and Venom, the later who had Spider-Man's Symbiote costume which Peter rejected for his terrible deeds and went to Eddie Brock Jr., kidnap Mary Jane to force Spider-Man into action, Peter goes to the disfigured Harry for help. Harry at first refuses, but once his butler informs him that he knew all along that Norman's death was a result of his own weaponry and not due to Spider-Man, he goes to help Spider-Man rescue Mary Jane. In the ensuing conflict, Harry is impaled and fatally wounded with his own glider by Venom, sacrificing himself to save Peter. As he died, Peter, who just forgave Sandman for accidentally killing his uncle two years earlier, as well as Harry finally forgive each other, with Harry telling him that Peter's his best friend. Peter and Mary Jane attend Harry's funeral together, heartbroken, as well as they begin fixing their relationship which Harry broke (in a misguided attempt to avenge his father's death).[1]

Attributes

Powers

Goblin Formula:After Osborn discovered his father's hidden arsenal, he used human performance enhancers on himself to obtain similar powers to the Green Goblin. He was already somewhat athletic, having played basketball in his youth and also been a skilled surfer.Osborn's enhancement was greater than that of his father's, as Mendel Stromm stopped the procedure for the latter before it could finish. After exposing himself to the Human-Enhancer Formula, Harry gained superhuman strength, agility, reflexes, durability, stamina, senses, as well as healing, all comparable to Spider-Man himself.

  • Superhuman Strength: When enhanced with the Goblin Formula his strength was comparable to Spider-Man. Osborn's strength was enhanced to superhuman levels, allowing him to contend with Spider-Man even when the latter's strength was heightened by Venom. During his first fight against the hero, he was able to rip out a portion of a brick wall with one hand and even cut through his webbing with his arm blades. He could launch him considerable distances with his strikes and drag him along the side of a building with one hand as well, and throw him through two floor-to-ceiling windows.
  • Superhuman Durability: The formula made Harry incredibly resilient to trauma; he was able to survive high velocity impact traumas, as well as endure blows from the enhanced human Peter Parker. Osborn's anatomical strength was also enhanced to support his new strength. As such, he was able to take blows from Spider-Man, even when enhanced by Venom. He was barely fazed by a Razor Bat piercing his shoulder and he was also able to survive a long fall and only suffer from temporary amnesia, as well as being tossed around by Parker well and even sustain a Pumpkin Bomb's explosion to his face, although it disfigured him. However, he could not survive being impaled by his glider, like his father, and falling several stories.
  • Superhuman Speed: The formula also enhanced Harry's physical speed; being able to rapidly manoeuvre the Sky Stick, as well as keep up in fight with Spider-Man. Harry was also able to disappear from a coffee shop in the very brief time it took for a bus to pass by, and was able to quickly intervene when Eddie Brock attempted to kill Spider-Man; being impaled in his stead.
  • Superhuman Stamina: The formula enhanced Harry's stamina and endurance; making him more resilient to fatigue and pain. He was able to engage in prolonged battles with enhanced individuals such as Spider-Man, Venom and Sandman, all while showing no signs of fatigue. Harry was also able to continue fighting Spider-Man, despite receiving numerous blows, and being tossed about and thrown through the balcony doors of his penthouse, however, by the end of their last fight, Harry was beaten down by Spider-Man and was unable to get up, despite attempting a last-ditch effort to defeat Spider-Man by lobbing a Pumpkin Bomb at him.
  • Superhuman Agility: Harry was made extremely agile by the Formula, he was able able to throw Peter around, in spins and twists. The Formula enhanced Harry's reflexes, agility and bodily coordination; he was able to react fast enough to match blows with Spider-Man, as well as throw him around in spins and twists. Harry could also utilise and throw Pumpkin Bombs effectively, quickly react to and catch falling objects, as well as rapidly and easily coordinate his body to expertly manoeuvre the Sky Stick, and utilise it offensively against Spider-Man, as well as Sandman.
  • Superhuman Reflexes: Harry had quick reflexes, as seen when he unconsciously caught a falling vase immediately after catching a bouncing basketball.
  • Enhanced Senses: Harry was able to sense Peter behind him in his home.
  • Regenerative Healing Factor: The formula provided Harry with a highly efficient and effective healing factor, allowing him to recover from trauma and injuries at an accelerated rate. Harry was able to recover from the high velocity head trauma he endured, albeit while briefly suffering from short-term memory loss, as well as recover from most of the injuries he suffered during his conflicts with Spider-Man. Despite its effectiveness, Harry's healing factor does have certain limitations, while he was able to survive the point blank explosion from a Pumpkin Bomb, he still suffered scarring to the right side of his face and damage to his right eye, Harry was also unable to survive being impaled through the chest with the razor-sharp spikes from his Sky Stick.
  • Enhanced Intelligence: His intelligence was also enhanced, similarly to his father. He became a master of manipulation and strategic planning. He may also be intuitive in the fields of science as well, being able to develop advanced technologies that he would use in combat.

Abilities

  • Gifted Intelligence: Harry was described by Peter as "really smart" by Peter; given the latter is a genius, this is high praise. With Peter's aid, Harry "nailed" his regents exams.
  • Expert Marksman
  • Skilled Combatant: Despite not receiving any combat training, Harry's enhanced attributes made him a highly skilled hand-to-hand combatant, who was able to even the odds with Spider-Man. However, he seemed not to be fully experienced by the black symbioted Spider-Man, who was able to defeat Harry by slamming him against a wall and disfiguring him with a Pumpkin Bomb. Harry later showed his skills in hand-to-hand combat when he was able to defeat the Sandman and fight against Venom during the Battle at the Construction Sight.
  • Expert Businessman: Following his father's death, Harry became the new CEO of Oscorp and assumed control of the company's Special Projects division. He had the wealth and resources to provide Otto Octavius with precious tritium, of which there is only 25 pounds on the whole planet.

Paraphernalia

Equipment

  • New Goblin Armor: Harry's suit/armor is less rugged than Norman's armor although it has good durability as it was able to withstand a pumpkin bomb blast.

Weapons

  • Pumpkin Bombs: Formally used by the Green Goblin, Harry used the Pumpkin Bombs to attack Spider-Man, then later Venom and Sandman.
  • Razor Bats: Harry used the Razor Bats to attack Spider-Man, who was able to defeat them using his webbing. He later used two of them to slash Venom on the arms, who was attempting to kill Spider-Man.
  • Ionic Sword: As the New Goblin, Harry carried a razor sharp sword to use aganist any opponent. It has a green energy supply to give it enough strength to cause damage.
  • Retractable arm blades

Transportation

Harold Osborn (Earth-96283) from Spider-Man 3 (film) 0001
The New Goblin rides a high-tech, snowboard-shaped glider called the Sky Stick, which is also unnamed in the film. The board appears to have similar functions to the Goblin Glider that Norman stole, having the ability to store Pumpkin bombs and Razor Bats.
