History

Although he made his public debut in 1939 to stop crimes being committed and the New York's World's Fair in 1939, Gravestone is actually hundreds of years old. Gravestone's past is unknown to the world, but centuries ago, he had failed to save his people and his lover Daedra from a diseased and overcrowded world, condemning them to limbo.[1]

For unknown reasons, Gravestone is able to resurrect after dying (and fighting monsters in the underworld to gain passage to life), earning him the enmity of Shakra.[2][1]

Notes

  • Gravestone is loosely based on Centaur Publications' character Fantom of the Fair, a Golden Age superhero who had fallen into the public domain by the time Protectors was conceived.[3] However, the Golden Age Fantom did not appear to be a supernatural character, and has an unnamed civilian identity.[4]
  • Promotional artwork for the Protectors in Malibu Sun #16 showed Gravestone named "Fantom" (referring to Fantom of the Fair), but the name was changed for the comic to avoid confusion with The Phantom.[5]
