Synopsis for "Too Cold a Night for Dying!"

When Kyle Richmond and Trisha Starr are the victims of a car-bomb, the two are admitted to a hospital in critical condition. Both the Defenders and Yellowjacket (knowing Starr personally) seek out their attackers. Thinking it was his old foe, Egghead, who is also Trisha's uncle, Yellowjacket tracks him down and attacks him. He discovers that the down-on-his-luck Egghead blamed his niece for his misfortunes and, while not wanting to kill her, wanted to maim her in order to teach her a lesson.

The Defenders, not realizing that Yellowjacket had already tracked down the man responsible, try to locate those behind the attack on their teammate. The Defenders somehow learn that the Squadron Sinister had returned from their last defeat, and mistakenly believe that they had attacked their former teammate, Richmond, who (as Nighthawk) was a member of the Squadron Sinister. The Defenders are easily defeated and made prisoner. With the help of Yellowjacket, however, they free themselves and defeat the Squadron.

Both Kyle and Trisha survived the attack, but Trish lost her left arm. Later, when they are released from the hospital, Trisha decides to end her relationship with Kyle, finding his life of super-heroics too much to handle and not wanting him to feel that he has to stay with her out of pity.

Synopsis for "The Serum Must Get Through!"

Reprint of the 4th story from
Human Torch #4

In the cold arctic wastes of Alaska, a medium-sized town is being ravaged by an influenza outbreak. Doctors are frantic for a new serum that can battle the disease and wire Washington for a supply, which is soon being flown to the area. A storm threatens to turn the ship back and Sub-Mariner is asked to get the serum through by swimming an initial supply through. But the ice bests Prince Namor, who falls unconscious amid the great chunks of ice. Up above, planes searching for Namor encounter the storm and one crashes near Prince Namor, rousing him and allowing him to save the pilot from sure death. Other planes land and rescue them. Meanwhile, the small town is now being menaced by huge icebergs and Namor orders the planes to the town as quickly as possible to evacuate all residents. As Sub-Mariner nears the town, he sees a giant iceberg and blasts it to smithereens with a few bombs. This causes a fire and Namor takes care of that problem only to see the town now menaced by flood waters and freezing cold temperatures. He breaks through the ice to note that he is standing over the city's gasoline supply, which he ignites thereby warming up the town, melting the ice and allowing him to deliver the serum to the hospital.

Synopsis for "Witchcraft in the Wax Museum!"

Reprint of the 2nd story from
Strange Tales #121

Answering a call for help by traveling via his astral form, Doctor Strange finds that it is a hoax. Returning to his Sanctum, Strange discovers that his body has been stolen. Baron Mordo contacts him and explains that he stole the body, hoping that Strange would spend too much time outside his body, and perish.

After battling ectoplasmic warriors summoned by Mordo, Strange tracks Mordo to a wax museum, where Strange's body has been put on display, but shielded from him with a spell. When Mordo attacks in person, Strange possesses one of the wax sculptures and physically takes out his opponent, tying him up. Mordo leaves his body in astral form, where he and Strange battle. Strange conjures a spell, trapping Mordo in a mystical shield preventing him from returning to his body. With Mordo defeated, Strange reverses the spell on his own physical body and returns to it. He puts Mordo's body on display in the wax museum.
