One of Max Eisenhardt's teachers growing up. He warned Max that standing out would lead to him being beaten down. Kalb was fired from his teaching post as the Nazis began their discrimination against Jewish citizens and he later ended up at Auschwitz. Meeting his former pupil there, Kalb helped him as best as he could to survive, trying to get him assigned to the Kanada Kommando, those who sorted the belongings of the new arrivals, he accidentally got him assigned to the Sonderkommando, the detail that was forced to aid the Nazis in the various methods of killing Jewish prisoners. It was while doing this job that Max sighted Fritz's corpse on a conveyor belt that led to the cremation chamber.[citation needed]
