The Fin was a superhuman bruiser, apparently dim-witted and focusing his life in just fighting and eating, and with poor social skills. He had forgotten his original name and had conflicted thoughts when called "the Fin", but offered no alternative moniker.

The Fin was a member of the mercenary team Next Wave, working for Baron Strucker's Hydra; but the Fin resigned, along with his teammate and later friend Sandman, to join Silver Sable's Wild Pack. Sable included the Fin and Sandman in her new superhuman unit, the Intruders, along with Paladin, Man-Eater and later Lightbright. As a member of the Intruders, the Fin fought against Somalian rebels, Los Angeles teen gangs, and villains including the Bio-Genes, a Pit-Viper, the Beetle, Blizzard, Baron Strucker's Hydra and the Genesis Coalition, the latter of which required him to ally with Strucker's forces.

After the Civil War, the Fin joined the 50-State Initiative superhero team for Vermont, the Garrison, along with another Intruder, Man-Eater. While protecting a nuclear facility, both were defeated by Penance (Robbie Baldwin).

History

The Fin was an enigmatic[13] superhuman[7] strongman[14] with an unknown origin. The Fin himself had forgotten his own origin[7] and previous identity,[7][6] claiming it was on purpose as it embarrassed him.[6] Focusing his life on fighting and eating,[7] the Fin joined the freelance mercenary team Next Wave,[5][7][15] rival of Silver Sable's Wild Pack,[7][15][8][16] and that had also just recruited former Wild Pack member Sandman.[17] Although the Fin insisted that his name was not the Fin, the other members of Next Wave called him that,[5][16] especially since the Fin had not offered any alternative name.[5]

In the Fin's first known appearance, Next Wave had been hired by Hydra to recover a mobile base stolen by Hydra splinter group Genesis Coalition, at that point in the Mediterranean Sea. Next Wave broke in in a scandalous manner, thus they were immediately detected, and the Genesis Coalition sent its powerful cyborg Cyberwarriors to stop the intruders, at the same time flooding the affected area because the Cyberwarriors didn't need to breathe but the intruders possibly did. Next Wave found Sable's Wild Pack also infiltrating the same base on their own mission.[5] The Wild Pack found the Next Wave to be too braggadocio and unprofessional to be efficient,[16] and even Sandman was unhappy with their new associates.[16][14] Sable, however, was favorably impressed by Fin's superhuman strength, and from that moment on she considered hiring him to fill the vacancy left by Sandman. The Wild Pack escaped from the mobile battlestation and tracked the Genesis Coalition to Mount Wundagore, Transia, where they fought the Cyberwarriors. Next Wave arrived shortly after and tried to help, but Sable berated them because their botched effort had jeopardized both a clear victory, and all of Transia. Embarrassed, the Fin intervened to say that he just wanted to hit something, but his Next Wave bandmate, Turk, tried to hush the Fin because of his poor social talents. Next Wave, having failed in their mission for Hydra, offered to work for the Wild Pack in the future, but Sable was openly reluctant to even count on them.[16]

Sandman decided to leave the Next Wave and return to the Wild Pack, and Fin accompanied him when he left the Next Wave.[8] Sable immediately recruited the Fin[7][15] and, when she formed a new[14] team of superhuman operatives, the Intruders,[14][11][13] she included the Fin in it.[7][15] Other members of the Intruders were Sandman,[4][7][15] field commander of the group;[7][15][8] human-tiger hybrid Man-Eater,[7][15] who had been mutated by the Genesis Coalition;[11] and well-trained mercenary Paladin. Although the Intruders were officially headquartered at the Symkarian Embassy in New York City,[7][15] the Fin and the rest of the group spent a lot of time in Symkaria, to the point that the Fin became officially resident there.[18] At the Embassy, the Fin sometimes sparred against an ad-hoc stonewall provided by the Sandman, as a test of strength.[19]

As their first mission,[7][15][14] the Intruders tracked down a Pit-Viper, one of the many lookalikes of nihilistic criminal Viper[7][15][14] in Kentucky,[7][15][3][13] because the Red Skull had hired the Wild Pack to capture the real Viper,[7][15][3] and Sable organized several teams to track down each sightings. In a Kentucky forest, the Intruders successfully captured the Pit-Viper and identified her as a fake.[3]

The Intruders and other Wild Pack teams were next sent to Somalia to protect a shipment of food and medicine.[4] Sable took advantage of this operation to give the Intruders[7][15] a training mission facing a foreseeable attack by armed raiders. The Intruders defeated twenty-three enemies in forty-six seconds, with no casualties, much to Fin's satisfaction. Although their victory was not in doubt, Sable took the opportunity to see how they worked as a team, and had no complaints.[4]

The Somalia operation became complicated when[4] a group of Somali mutants, the Bio-Genes,[13][14] attacked a nearby U.S. Marine outpost to try to expel the foreigners,[4][14] and it got worse due to the sudden arrival of the "goodwill wave" generated by the Goddess, which encouraged people not to fight,[4][9]}[14] and Baron Strucker's Hydra's arrival to conquer Somalia for the southern warlords.[4][7][15] The powers of Bio Genes' Leecher affected the emotions of the Fin and Man-Eater, preventing them from fighting, but Sable defeated Leecher shortly after and forced him to restore the Fin and Man-Eater.[9] The Intruders ended up allying with the Bio-Genes against Hydra,[13] and Sandman took the Fin to Strucker's mothership, following Sable. Sandman used Fin as a shield to protect Sable from an attack by Baron Strucker's Satan Claw, which the Fin withstood without problems. The Fin and Sandman managed to defeat Strucker, although Strucker managed to escape.[9]

When the group had a free night, they convinced Sandman to go out with the Fin to help him integrate into the group. Although the situation was tense for Sandman,[6] they improved their mutual friendship[8] and Sandman discovered that the Fin was an intelligent man with sophisticated tastes who only pretended to be stupid so that others would not take advantage of him, but the Fin had decided open up to Sandman as a sign of trust.[6]

After the Intruders recruited a new member, Lightbright,[13] they accompanied the Wild Pack to Beverly Hills because over a hundred teenage bands had unified to take over the city, including a police precinct, and the rich inhabitants wanted it back. Sable and her group attempted to retake the precinct, while the Intruders fought in the streets. They had orders not to kill the enemies, who were only children, but the Fin did not approve because they were armed children killing police officers. The Fin intimidated two thugs, "G" and "Money", by resisting their volleys of bullets and lifting a car. It was then discovered that the alliance was secretly sponsored by crime boss Justin Hammer who, upon hearing of the Wild Pack's presence, sent a group of battle-armored supervillains as reinforcements.[20] The Intruders joined the Wild Pack in defending the precinct, and there the Fin withstood the attacks of Blizzard, and then stopped the Beetle when he tried to attack Sable; humiliatingly, the Fin defeated the Beetle with a single punch, making a joke about "swatting rude bugs." Finally, the mercenaries retreated, and the Wild Pack won the day.[1]

When Sable found the Genesis Coalition's secret base, she went there with her team, expecting the Intruders to follow minutes later.[4] Simultaneously, the Coalition was attacking Bosnia with troops pretending to be Hydra agents, so that Hydra would take the blame. Uncovering a complex Coalition conspiracy, Sable ordered the Intruders to alter their plans and go to Bosnia to stop the conflict. Other groups interested in stopping this attack were Baron Strucker's Hydra, offended by the defamation, and law enforcement agency SHIELD. When the Intruders arrived, Sandman saw that SHIELD had the situation under control in the east, and had them go west, where there was more conflict, much to the Fin's satisfaction. The Intruders forged an unexpected alliance with Strucker's people, and their presence in Bosnia was vital in scuttling the Coalition's plans.[10]

At a later date, due to a chemical imbalance, Man-Eater lost control over his actions and terrorized Manhattan, putting NYPD's anti-superhuman police strike force Blue on his tail while he reached the Central Park Zoo.[21][7][15][13] Sable and Wild Pack member Battlestar followed Man-Eater there, coming into conflict with Code: Blue to avoid lethal tactics. Another Wild Pack member, Raul Quentino, sent the Fin and Sandman as reinforcements. When Man-Eater entered the polar bear pit, Sandman prepared a ramp for Sable to get there, but he did not let Code: Blue pass. The Fin and Battlestar kept the bears busy, hugging them so they wouldn't interfere, while Sable managed to stun and capture Man-Eater.[21]

Shortly after, Sable was sent to prison. At the Symkarian Embassy, Sable's manager Mortimer gathered the Intruders and the Wild Pack to inform them of what had happened and explained that Sable wanted everyone sent to Symkaria before the American government found excuses to arrest them too. When the situation became clear and Sable was released (although she was no longer welcome on American soil), she relocated to Symkaria and arranged for the Intruders to continue operating in the United States from the embassy.[22] She then summoned them to Castle Sable in Symkaria where she told them she was retiring from active missions. At that time, Sandman had tried to start a romance with Sable,[23] but the changes caused them to not be able to be together, and Sandman opened up to the Fin, explaining that the situation was destroying him. In his usual attitude, the Fin suggested to Sandman that he simply find something to hit to improve his mood.[12]

With their work schedule full,[12] the Intruders set out on their last known mission[7][15] to try to recover an alien relic in Antarctica,[12][7][15] with the participation of the Fin.[12] It is not known whether they were successful. The Intruders were eventually dismantled, perhaps when Sandman reverted to being a supervillain due to a mental switch.[7][15]

In the aftermath of the superhero Civil War, the Fin registered,[7] although he had not appeared on the list of potential recruits of the 50-State Initiative.[24] The Fin and his former partner Man-Eater were assigned to Vermont's Initiative team, the Garrison.[7][13] In one of their first missions,[13] the Garrison was to protect a nuclear facility from rogue Thunderbolts member Penance (Robbie Baldwin),[13][2] with direct orders from the President and military support.[2] However, Penance easily knocked the Fin and Man-Eater out.[13][2] It is unclear what the status of the Garrison was after this defeat.[13]

Personality

The Fin had an attitude of enigmatic bruiser[7] focusing in single-minded[8] interests including fighting[7][9][10] and eating,[7][11] with related interests being winning (if it was not too easy a fight)[4] and hitting,[4] the last of which had a cathartic effect on him and, he assumed, on everyone else.[12] His needs covered, he rejected other people's mundane interests, such as an opportunity to earn more money.[9] He had forgotten his previous life,[7] and even his name, which was somehow shameful.[6] He offered no alternative name for himself other than the Fin, but frequently reprimanded his allies when they called him that.[5][3][9] However, the Fin was secretly a very intelligent man with sophisticated tastes, including listening to opera, and advanced skills, including physics and algebra. He nevertheless hid this part of his identity, fearing that even his so-called allies would take advantage of him, revealing this side of himself to very few people.[6]

The only person whom the Fin revealed his real side was his teammate and leader Sandman,[6] who made an effort to really become the Fin's friend.[8] While Sandman was shocked and confused at how the Fin had wrecked their night out with weird ideas and behavior, they became closer after that,[6] and Sandman also went to the Fin with sentimental troubles.[12] Another of his teammates, Paladin, failed to impress the Fin with his personal charm and presumptuous attitude,[3] much less with his mercenary goals.[9]

Attributes

Powers

  • Superhuman Durability: The Fin had extraordinary superpowers of resistance. He was invulnerable to traditional bullets,[4][20], and Blizzard's attempts to stop the Fin with extreme cold attacks only succeeded in angering the Fin.[1] The Fin also withstood stone-based attacks by Transfaser, which he barely noticed; and more impressively, a direct plasma blast from Baron Strucker's Satan Claw.[9]
  • Superhuman Strength: The Fin possessed an unrecorded level of superhuman strength, rivaling the Cyberwarriors.[16] The Fin could twist rifles with his bare hands,[4] lift cars off the ground[20] or smash them apart with a single punch.[6]
  • Telelocation: The Fin had the ability to send out a signal toward any object at a rate of one hundred times a second (possibly a form of sonar), which he used for echolocation. He calculated the distances and speeds by head, counting the millimeters per second that an object moved, and even approximated exact weights of items.[6]

Abilities

The Fin is very intelligent an expert in physics, but it has not been revealed whether this was training or just a personal interest. The Fin has keeps his scientific expertise quiet as to not be exploited by his teammates and other individuals, instead pretending to be dumb;[6] he lifted his short teammate Larry Arnold so that Arnold's sight was not blocked, even if there was nothing in front of Arnold.[22]

In other skills, the Fin could pilot a Stealthcraft[10] and could eat a watermelon up, including its skin.[11]

Weaknesses

The Fin was affected by the Leecher's mutant emotion-control powers.[9]

Trivia

  • The Fin's fin is foldable and can be simply a small addendum on his head, or cover all of his back through his spine. The effect of the fin is unrevealed.[6]
  • While the Fin was listed as a resident of Symkaria,[18] the official headquarters of the Intruders was in the Symkarian Embassy in New York City.[7][15] During his time working for Silver Sable, the Fin was seen alternating both bases.
