History
As a Nazi soldier, Horst Lederer found himself in a bunker next to the one the Red Skull (Johann Shmidt) was fighting Captain America in at the end of World War II. As Cap defeated the Skull, allied bombers destroyed the bunkers, entrapping Lederer alongside fellow soldier Wolfgang Brenner and Schmidt himself. Luckily, the destruction also released an experimental gas which put the three men into suspended animation.[2]
Decades later,[3] the three were recovered and revived by AIM with the intent to use them to defame and frame Captain America for murder. Horst himself carried out the third phase of the plan to attempt to frame Cap using the Hypno-Helmet AIM had provided the men. However, Cap managed to figure out how they were affecting him and had SHIELD build him a hypno-protection circuit for his cowl. Cap surprised Horst, defeating him and causing him to reveal that the Red Skull had survived the bunker bombings.[2]
Unfortunately, the experimental gas the men were exposed to was not as effective as the Super Soldier Serum. Not long after his defeat, Horst was next seen as a much older man in servitude to the Skull, who was also aging rapidly. When he advised the Skull that he was not well and should take things easy, he was rewarded for his efforts with a swift blow to the neck.[4]
The blow ultimately cut Horst's life short, and he died the next day at Skull-House. While Red Skull seemed to be upset by Horst's death, he insisted he was only interested in the effects of the gas.[5]Attributes
