History
Gaeric was a young Gunderman of the Aquilonian garrison of Venarium.
He was the lover of Tamera,[1] the daughter of Commander Metrius, and was always hanging around her. Conan came to fancy Tamera during his visits to Venarium.
During the Battle of Venarium and its aftermaths, after having slain Metrius,[2] Conan followed Tamera, battling with Gaeric into Dagon's Cave, but finally let them go while protecting them from the People of the Dark.
A similar confrontation occurred in the Modern Age, with Jim O'Brien who intended to murder Richard Brent and take Eleanor Rand for himself, but instead sacrificed his life to save them from the People of the Dark (after himself reliving the events following the sack of Venarium through the eyes of Conan).[1]Notes
- Vertorix was originally created by Robert E. Howard as a Briton warrior in his story "People of the Dark" (Strange Tales; June, 1932), which involved "Conan the reaver", a Gael raider battling Britons. The story was freely adapted in Savage Sword of Conan #6 (June, 1975), written by Roy Thomas and penciled by Alex Nino. The adaption set the story in the immediate following of the Battle of Venarium.
- The name "Vertorix" was instead used for an animated warrior of living metal appearing in "The Gods of Bal-Sagoth" (Conan the Barbarian #17; August, 1972), freely adapted from the eponymous non-Conan Turlogh Dubh O'Brien and Cthulhu Mythos story.
Trivia
- Despite his old look in "Barbarians at the Gate!" (Conan the Adventurer #1; June, 1994), he is somewhat consistently depicted similarly (gear and beard) than in "People of the Dark" Savage Sword of Conan #6 (June, 1975), where he was mentioned to be young.
