History

The early history of Excalibur largely mirrors that of their Earth-616 counterparts.

Excalibur was a team of both mutant and human heroes founded by Captain Britain. Following the mutation of humanity, and the dissolution of the X-Men, Excalibur continued their fight as heroes. During an encounter with the Grey Gargoyle, the entire team of Excalibur was petrified by the Gargoyle's powers. In a fit of rage, Captain Britain killed him, realizing too late that in doing so, he had ensured that no one could reverse Exaclibur's fate.[1]

The sole survivor, besides Captain Britain, was Nightcrawler, who lost his arm and was temporarily made human by teleporting at the exact moment the Grey Gargoyle used his powers. He was discovered by Mephisto, who manipulated him into becoming Belasco.[2]

Captain Britain searched for years for ways of reversing Excalibur's fate, bringing alternate reality versions of the Grey Gargoyle to Earth-9997 in the hopes that they could undo the petrification, to no avail. He even found the legendary sword of Excalibur, a blade capable of cutting through stone, but ultimately chose not to use it, afraid that the blade would kill his teammates rather than free them.[1]

Excalibur were ultimately freed by Mephisto, posing as an alternate reality version of the Grey Gargoyle, just before Captain Britain's wedding to Queen Medusa. In doing so, Mephisto hoped to destabilize England, through the chaos generated by freeing Captain Britain's first wife Meggan just before his wedding.[3]
