History

Origin[]

Everett Thomas was a mutant born in St. Louis, Missouri. He possessed an aura which allowed him to synch up with other superhumans in his immediate vicinity, thereby briefly gaining any powers they possessed.[1]

Phalanx[]

The mechanical collective race known as the Phalanx had assimilated the X-Men and attempted to wipe out what was to be the next generation of mutant heroes: (Husk, Jubilee, Skin, M, and Blink). Synch had accidentally synched to Banshee, who was in the area, and had shattered all the windows nearby with Banshee's "borrowed" scream. He didn't understand how he did it, but the next thing he knew there was a slew of police officers with guns pointed at him. Unfortunately for them, the menace wasn't Everett, but the Phalanx, who attacked the officers. Luckily, he was saved thanks to the help of Emma Frost, Sabretooth, Banshee, and Jubilee. This misfit band of heroes ended up saving the other kids who were attacked by the Phalanx and, thanks with the sacrifice of Blink, they managed to escape.[9]

Generation X[]

Following the end of the Phalanx crisis, Everett and the other youths were all relocated to the Massachusetts Academy, where they trained to use their powers, received a formal education, and acted as the next generation of X-Men, Generation X.[10][11] During his time with Gen X, he was briefly transformed into a voracious parasitic mutant by the team's arch-nemesis Emplate who wanted to destroy Synch's happy family life. Under Emplate's influence, Synch menaced his family and friends until M, who he had difficulty synching with, was able to defeat him.[12]

When Emma Frost's sister, Adrienne, returned to America, she forced Emma to re-accept her as Headmistress. If not, Adrienne would release information to the parents of the normal kids that the Xavier School For Gifted Youngsters was a secret training ground for mutants.[13] During this time, Synch began a relationship with Monet and became one of the few people she would open up to.[14] Later, Adrienne stirred up mutant hatred amongst the human students in the school. When the parents of the non-mutant students heard that their children were going to school with mutants, they all arrived together to take them away from the academy. However, Adrienne Frost had also planted bombs all around the school.

When Banshee and Synch set out to turn off and deactivate all the bombs while Emma and Adrienne fought, Synch found a bomb with too many human students nearby. He tried to "synch" with the nearest mutant, Monet, however, she was too far away, so he only received a portion of her powers. Using all his might, he threw the human kids out of the room, saving them from the explosion. Sadly, he wasn't able to save himself, dying to save his human peers.[5]

Necrosha[]

Synch was many years later among the many mutants temporarily resurrected by Eli Bard's Transmode Virus to serve as part of Selene's army of undead mutants.[6]

Dawn of X[]

Synch was one of the earliest resurrected mutants by the hand of the Five, due to the fact that it was believed that his powers could enable him to act as a substitute for any of the Five who might need one. Skin was resurrected ahead of his scheduled time to serve as a companion for Synch, as they came from similar backgrounds and time periods.[8]

On Jubilee's birthday, Everett finally reunited with her and Husk, as they went on a LARP escape room with Skin. Monet had also been invited but she said she'd join them afterwards for drinks. When Skin used his powers to overcome one of the puzzles, the staff of the escape room realized they were mutants and released a Sentinel against them, while sending personnel to attack them. After Skin was injured, the odds weren't looking good for their side, but Monet burst through the roof and destroyed the sentinel, saving everyone's lives. The five friends then went to a bar to reminisce about old times.[15]

The Vault[]

Later, Synch, Darwin, and Wolverine (Laura) were picked to capture Serafina by entering The Vault, a place where anyone trapped inside could remain there for subjectively thousands of years. Unfortunately, as soon as the three entered the Vault, they lost touch with the X-Men.[8]

During their first day, while engaging the Children of the Vault in battle, Ev discovered that his power now allowed him to synch with non-mutants. With this revelation, he duplicated the Post-Human Fuego's pyrokinesis, and incinerated some of them. After seeing her teammates killed, Aguja angrily killed herself by projecting a force field that destroyed everything around her in an attempt to kill her foes.[16]

However, Synch and his teammates recovered, with Synch copying Wolverine's healing factor. The team then spent 100 years inside the Vault gathering intelligence on the Children. Synch used Wolverine's healing factor to slow his aging and learned that City could resurrect any Children that were killed through cloning in order to continuously evolve them.[4] Wolverine and Synch also became romantically involved, although it took Laura time to warm up to him - their first kiss didn't happen until their 217th year together.[17] When Wolverine and Darwin were captured, Synch fled the Vault since he could no longer rely on Wolverine's longevity powers to slow his aging. After waiting a week outside, Synch returned to the Vault, where 100 years had past. Synch rescued Wolverine but was unable to save Darwin, who got captured by the City to help develop a new generation of Children. The couple then attempted to leave the Vault, but Wolverine had to stay behind to hold off the Children while Synch fled outside. Synch was eventually killed by the Children, but managed to make telepathic contact with X and ensure everything he'd learned about the Vault was passed onto his resurrected form. Wolverine was also resurrected, but without the memories of their time in the Vault, leaving Synch with the burden of remembering their time together all alone.[4]

Joining X-Men[]

During the first inaugural Hellfire Gala, both Laura and Synch were elected to join the newest X-Men lineup.[18] As members of the new team, they moved to a techno-organic Treehouse in Central Park. It didn't take long for the team to have to protect the world from exterior threats: one by the Mind Reaver in Manhattan,[19] the other by the Annihilation Wave in Kansas.[20] They were later attacked at their base by The High Evolutionary, who forced Synch to give a drop of his blood in order to stop him from releasing a deadly virus into the city. In exchange he informed them that the alien attacks were the work of the intergalactic crime lord Cordyceps Jones who had been running bets on who could destroy the Earth first at his casino Gameworld.[21]

With the X-Men, Synch also dealt with the Reavers, animal hybrids created by Doctor Stasis,[22] and a terrorist attack by M.O.D.O.K. During their time on the same team, Synch tried to approach Wolverine again and even considered using Jean Grey's gift to show their shared experiences to her, but eventually decided against it.[17] He accompanied Cyclops into the tunnels under the city in hopes of tracking down Doctor Stasis.[23]

Synch eventually gave up on trying to approach Wolverine, reasoning that she had a different life than the Laura he knew in the Vault, and that it was not fair for him to burden her with his knowledge. An evaluation by Dr. Cecilia Reyes made Synch aware that his ability to synch with familiar mutants from stored memory was draining on his lifespan. During the next year's Hellfire Gala the X-Men roster was changed and Laura stepped down while Synch decided to stay on the team.[24] Everett continued to fight alongside the new members on the team during the Judgment Day.[25]

Forge eventually went back inside the Vault to rescue whom he believed to be Darwin, only to find Wolverine instead.[26] Realizing that she had not been killed during their escape as originally thought, Forge managed to get her out. Laura was reunited with Synch and immediately jumped into his arms in a passionate kiss. She then moved in with him into the Treehouse,[27] resuming their relationship which was by now many hundreds of years strong.[28]

Fall of X[]

Synch and Laura (who now went by Talon to differentiate herself from her younger "clone") were elected to remain on the X-Men at the third Hellfire Gala, being joined by veteran heroes such as Juggernaut, Frenzy, and Jubilee. However, the Gala was attacked by the forces of the anti-Mutant terrorist group Orchis. All of the new X-Men bar Talon, Synch, and Juggernaut were killed by Nimrod, and most other mutants were either killed, captured, or banished from Earth, entering Krakoan gateways that would send them to Vanaheim or the White Hot Room.[29] With Marvel Girl seemingly dead, Cyclops in Orchis captivity, and most other mutant heroes in hiding or acting as part of other teams (including Captain America's's Avengers Unity Division, Goblin Queen's Dark X-Men or Sage's X-Force), Everett and Laura found themselves as the new leaders of the X-Men. With a team composed of Kate Pryde (now going by Shadowkat), Juggernaut, Ms. Marvel, and Rasputin IV, a hideout in the Morlock tunnels underneath New York, and allies including Spider-Man, Firestar, Emma Frost, and Iron Man, the new X-Men would begin plotting a counterattack on Orchis.[30]

As part of these preparations, Everett and Laura would mount an assault on the High Evolutionary, hoping to forcibly recruit his help. This would fail disastrously, with Laura being completely disintegrated, her consciousness living on in Everett's mind thanks to telepathy borrowed from Marvel Girl.[31]

Powers

Synchronistic Power Replication: Synch possesses an aura that allows him to be "in sync" with other superhumans in his immediate vicinity, thereby gaining any powers they possess.[16] The powers Everett "syncs" will fade if the superhuman he is "in synch" with leaves the vicinity.[5] When Synch uses his powers, a multi-colored aura appears around his body. The aura is caused by the energies he is absorbing splitting the ambient light around him, which causes the described effect.[citation needed] Synch doesn't need just a physical person to copy powers. Tissue samples from superhumans are enough for him to copy their powers.[4]

In a number of cases his manifestation of their powers may be more powerful or versatile, such as flight while synched with Chamber[32][33] or his aura becoming a protective shield while syncing Penance.[2]

After being resurrected by the Five, Synch's baseline powers were amplified and he can now retain a limited "memory" of the people he was in synch with. This put Synch up for consideration for being an Omega mutant.[34] He also moved past limitations on absorbing only powers mutant to being able to borrow powers of any enhanced beings. Everett has also synched his powers with others without having his aura visible.[16]

  • Aura Tracking: He was able to track other mutants by allowing his aura to lock on to a mutant's biosignature, and the aura extends in the general direction in which the mutant is located.[35]

Weaknesses

  • Although Synch can now "sync" with people out of range from "memory," doing so shortens his lifespan and causes him to age rapidly.[24]

Notes

  • On one occasion Synch apparently duplicated Spider-Man's powers when both were exposed to a mutagenic pollen from Plantman.[36] This seems to be the only instance of him syncing with a non-mutant until his resurrection by the Five.[16]
  • He was also able to synch with Gaia,[37] a mutant but not necessarily a human one.
  • While he was dead, Sofia Mantega suggested he was the new Night Thrasher.[38]
  • After the resurrection, he seems to be more flexible to the idea of killing, as he killed a couple of Post-Humans.[16]

Trivia

  • Ev was a big fan of She-Hulk and Black Panther.[39]
  • Before his powers manifested, Ev was studying hard in hopes of attending university and majoring in political science. His dream was to use the skills for outreach to the less fortunate.[40]
