History

Origins[]

The Elders of the Universe were the last survivors of the previous universe, whose destruction gave birth to the current cosmos. This previous universe was destroyed as a result of overpopulation by the Celestials.[1]

The Elders banded together and sought to re-create their cosmos. Aware that they could not directly challenge the Celestials, the Elders sought to recreate their universe from the remains of the Celestials' procreation. To that end, they created the Realm of the Dead as a collecting pool, which would gather the matter and souls of the deceased. The Elder known as Death was placed in charge of this realm. [1]

Modern Age[]

The Elders foresaw that Death would eventually be destroyed, and thus charged another Elder; the Phoenix Force with making its way to the Realm of the Dead in order to aid in the collection of mortal souls. As the Phoenix was a being of pure creation, it could not simply kill itself, and instead needed to find a mortal host to bond with so that they could die together. The Phoenix chose Jean Grey, an Earth mutant, whose telepathic screams for help attracted the Phoenix. The Phoenix bonded with Jean, and created a psychic rapport with her boyfriend Cyclops. The Phoenix eventually succeeded in its objective, and died, passing into the Realm of the Dead.[2]

However, the Elders had not foreseen how the human emotions it experienced through Jean Grey, chief of all her love for Cyclops, would change the Phoenix. Once in the Realm of the Dead, it turned its back on the Elders' schemes.[1]

Another Elder, the Grandmaster, discovered the hero Hyperion, a superpowered being from another reality. The Grandmaster grew impressed with Hyperion's power and charisma, and created a copy of his own, whom he sent to the real Hyperion's world in order to destroy the Squadron Supreme. This plot would also fail, as the real Hyperion killed the copy, who would also go on to betray the Grandmaster and the Elders after awakening in the Realm of the Dead.[3]

War Against Mar-Vell[]

Following the mutation of humanity, the deceased Kree hero Mar-Vell began waging war against the Elders. Mar-Vell had been trapped within the Realm of the Dead after his death, but unlike the other denizens, who all believed themselves to be alive, Mar-Vell eventually realized that he was dead. Mar-Vell tried to reach out to the cosmic consciousness he had once possessed in life, and after saving the Silver Surfer from the clutches of Death, the Enigma Force found him.[4]

Empowered by the Enigma Force, and reborn into the mortal world as a binary being, Mar-Vell began a quest to destroy Death and free all the souls trapped in the Realm of the Dead. Building an ever-expanding army of the deceased, including the Phoenix Force, Mar-Vell was eventually successful in completing his cosmic consciousness and destroying Death.[5] [6]

With Death destroyed, Mar-Vell created Paradise, which served as a new afterlife for the deceased, as well as an ever-expanding shield, which would grow to cover the entire universe, and prevent both the Celestials and the Elders of the Universe from meddling with reality any further.[7]
