Synopsis for "The Great Divide"
Present day: An hour ago, Foggy Nelson ousted Matt Murdock from their shared law practice, concerned about Matt’s mental health after finding Matt’s father’s skull and old boxing gloves in Matt’s desk. Matt has since wandered to a street corner near the first office he and Foggy shared, where he reflects on other tumultuous times in the early days of Nelson & Murdock.
Years ago: Karen Page has left New York for Hollywood, and Foggy has lost several cases in a row after putting in minimal hours on them. During an argument over how Foggy is spending his time, Matt slams his hand down onto a videotape on Foggy’s desk, causing Foggy’s heart rate to spike. Matt pushes Foggy to tell him what is going on, but before Foggy can answer, Stilt-Man crashes through the external wall. Foggy tells Matt to run as Stilt-Man grabs the mysterious videotape. Matt dashes out of the office and leaps into the stairwell. As he changes into his Daredevil costume, he hears Foggy yelling at Stilt-Man and catches two names he doesn’t recognize: Fortknight and Pasko.
Stilt-Man proceeds to throw Foggy out the 23rd floor window, but fortunately, Daredevil swings by in time to catch him. Stilt-Man begins to stride away, but Daredevil is able to catch the cable of his billy club around one of Stilt-Man’s legs. Daredevil gets pulled behind Stilt-Man as news helicopters follow overhead. He tries to slow Stilt-Man down by hooking him to one of the helicopters, but Stilt-Man’s suit grants him enough strength to pull the chopper into a nearby building. Stilt-Man then throws Daredevil into the river and steps on his chest, pinning him to the bottom. Daredevil struggles, but takes off his glove and uses his heightened touch to locate a microscopic gap in the armor of Stilt-Man’s leg. He grabs a discarded bottle laying close by and smashes it into the weakness, causing hydraulic fluid to leak and the armor to fail.
Back above water, Daredevil wonders why anyone would hire someone as conspicuous as Stilt-Man to rob Foggy. It dawns on him that Stilt-Man would serve as a perfect distraction, then hurries back to the Nelson & Murdock office building. Daredevil arrives just in time to thwart an attempt on Foggy’s life.
Later at Grand Central Station’s Oyster Bar, Matt tells Foggy that after all the commotion, Daredevil gave him the videotape and files Stilt-Man stole. He asks Foggy who Fortknight and Pasko are and what is on the tape. Foggy tells Matt that he won the tape at an auction. Fortknight, meanwhile, is a predatory company that gives resources to inventors and then drowns them in legal issues to steal their products. Pasko is one such inventor who came to Foggy for help. When Foggy learned about Pasko’s invention - a machine that can broadcast images directly to the brain, bypassing dead optic nerves - he took the case pro bono in exchange for a percentage of future profits on the device. Foggy then asks Matt what he would want to see if he could have his sight restored for 30 minutes.
Sometime later, Foggy and Matt go to Pasko’s lab and set Matt up in the machine. Foggy puts the mysterious videotape into the machine and Matt begins to see camcorder footage of his father’s final boxing match, the championship victory that doomed him. With tears in his eyes and a splitting headache, Matt tells Pasko they’re both on his case.
Present day: Daredevil stands on a rooftop overlooking his father’s former gravesite. He tells himself that he finally likes his life, and won’t let whoever is trying to drive a wedge between he and Foggy take that away from him. Because he’s a winner, just like his dad.
