Daniel Grimm was the husband of Elsie Grimm and father to Ben and Dan Jr. He and his family lived an impoverished life on Yancy Street in New York's Lower East Side. He was an abusive alcoholic who could not hold down a job, forcing Dan Jr. to keep the family afloat with proceeds of crime earned through his role as leader of the Yancy Street Gang.[1][2] Dan Jr. was later killed in a knife fight with the Thompson Avenue Gang. There are two conflicting accounts as to how Daniel Grimm Sr. handled this news, both were told by Ben Grimm. In one account, it states that Daniel went to the police station to pick up his son Ben who was picked up by police at the scene, and clipped the boy over the head.[1] Another states that Daniel Grimm was not present because he was at a bar drinking and had to be asked to come home when police arrived with Ben.[3] The family somehow endured in spite of Daniel Grimm's disposition in life. By the time Ben was a teenager, and leader of the Yancy Street Gang, both Daniel and his wife Elsie died suddenly.[1] The cause of death has not been specified.

Daniel was survived by his son Benjamin, who was taken in by Daniel's brother Jacob.[1] Ben eventually became a football star in college,[4] a soldier[5] and test pilot for both the United States Air Force[6] and NASA.[7] Most famously, Ben Grimm was the pilot on the ill-fated space flight of Reed Richard's new Star Drive. The flight crashed due to a bombardment of cosmic rays that caused the crew to gain super-human abilities. They soon formed the Fantastic Four, the first heroes of the modern age.[8]

Daniel Grimm was an alcoholic who was prone to fits of rage and other abusive behavior.
