The visored mask Cyclops wears to prevent random discharge is lined with powdered ruby-quartz crystal. It incorporates two longitudinally mounted flat lenses which can lever inward providing a constantly variable exit slot of 0 inches to .79 inches in height and a constant width of 5.7 inches. The inverted clamshell mechanism is operated by a twin system of miniature electrical motors. As a safety factor there is a constant positive closing pressure provided by springs. The mask itself is made of high-impact cycolac plastic. There is an overriding finger-operated control mechanism on either side of the mask, and normal operation is through a flat micro-switch installed at the base of the thumb on each glove.
Cyclops has used at least five different versions of the visor, the first four were gold or bronze in color, and the fifth is black.
|Known as Version 5, this version of the visor is either black or dark gray.||Astonishing X-Men Vol 3 #1|
|When Cyclops was possessed by a portion of the Phoenix Force during the conflict between the Avengers and the X-Men, his suit, including his visor were redesigned.||Avengers vs. X-Men #5|
|After breaking out of prison during the Avengers vs. X-Men aftermath, Cyclops now sports a totally different attire with an X-shaped visor symbolizing the mutants and his planned revolution.||Uncanny X-Men Vol 3 #2|
First Class Version: A grey plastic visor, similar to the version 5. Professor X mentioned that he had at least a dozen copies of the visor in case of damage to the one that Scott was wearing at the time.
